The Cliff Anderson Sports Hall provided the stage for another absorbing day of competition, with teams battling to maintain their momentum, secure vital victories and build confidence ahead of the tournament’s climax.

The stakes were high, with important semifinals tickets on the line. The remaining contenders had little room for error in their pursuit of national junior indoor hockey supremacy across the U17 and U21 divisions.

In the lone Boys’ Under-21 division match on Thursday, SHC S’Team continued their relentless charge, overcoming OFHC Vipers 3-1 behind a commanding double from Ezekiel Moses.

Moses broke the deadlock in the 12th minute before Jabari Lovell doubled S’Team’s advantage three minutes later, giving the side a firm grip on proceedings.

OFHC Vipers responded through Yonick Norton to reduce the deficit, but S’Team remained composed under pressure. Moses struck again in the 23rd minute to complete his brace and seal another important victory for his team.

The result underlined S’Team’s consistency heading into the final day, with Moses once again proving decisive when it mattered most.

The Girls’ Under-17 division also produced an emphatic display, as OFHC Phantom Troupe overwhelmed Hikers Junior Jets 4-0 in their Group A encounter.

Tinashe Henry and Keitanna Percival gave Phantom Troupe a commanding start, establishing a two-goal cushion before Percival took center stage with two further strikes in the 11th and 17th minutes to complete a hat-trick.

The Boys’ Under-17 competition delivered its share of drama, with Hikers Hatchets edging Multi Alumni 1-0 in Group C.

The tightly contested encounter appeared destined for a narrow finish, and Keyon Todd supplied the decisive moment in the 18th minute, finding the breakthrough to spark celebrations for Hikers Hatchets.

However, it was GCC Outlaws who produced one of the most dominant attacking displays of the day, overwhelming SJHS Warriors in a goal-filled encounter.

Eli Atwell set the tone with an early brace, while Kristen Viapree added a different dimension to the Outlaws’ attack with three goals of his own. Jaleel Bynoe also found the net in the 18th minute, but the Warriors were unable to contain the relentless pressure as the Outlaws maintained their attacking intensity.

With the preliminary battles now complete and the semifinal line-up confirmed, attention turns to the championship-deciding day, when the best-performing teams across the various divisions will compete for a place in the finals before the ultimate showdown for honours.

At press time, OHFC Vipers, GCC Cowboys moved ahead with wins in the U21 division, while OFHC Phantom Troupe, SHC Sensation SHC Sigmas had already booked spots into U17 final with crucial wins.

Chase Defends Hope, Says His Record Deserves More Respect

0

West Indies all-rounder Roston Chase has defended white-ball captain Shai Hope against criticism of his performances, arguing that the wicketkeeper-batter continues to be underrated despite his consistent contributions at the highest level.

Chase’s comments followed Hope’s unbeaten 102 off just 45 balls on Friday, as West Indies chased down India’s 249 for five to win the second Twenty20 International by six wickets at the JSCA International Stadium Complex.

West Indies reached 252 for four in 18.3 overs, recording their highest successful run chase in T20 internationals and the second-highest successful chase in the format’s history.

Hope’s explosive innings included another milestone for the West Indies captain, whose century was the second-fastest by a West Indian in T20 internationals. He also shared a 120-run fourth-wicket partnership with Sherfane Rutherford, the highest for West Indies in that position in T20Is.

Speaking at the post-match press conference, Chase, who claimed three wickets for 24 runs from his four overs, said Hope’s ability to remain focused despite outside criticism was one of his greatest strengths.

“I think people underrate him a lot. Shai Hope is a guy that can blank out a lot of noise and just focus on what he has to do and I think that is his special skill.”

Chase, who captains West Indies in Test cricket, said Hope continued to deliver for the team even when circumstances were difficult.

“When everything seems to be going wrong, he is still out there giving his best and performing for the team, so I think that is his hallmark skill and he’s a great player.”

Hope’s latest century was his third in five matches during West Indies’ white-ball tour of India. He had scored two centuries in the preceding three-match One-Day International series, which India won 2-1.

Despite those performances, Chase said Hope’s overall record, particularly in limited-overs cricket, did not always receive the recognition it deserved.

“He doesn’t really have the record in red-ball cricket, but as I said, people play down his stats and his record that he has, especially in T20 cricket. Everyone knows he’s great in 50-over cricket and still sometimes people don’t give him the credit; they either say that he bats too slow or he bats for himself.”

Hope has built a substantial record across formats, averaging 51.48 in 158 ODIs, 32.15 in 72 T20 internationals and 27.97 in 49 Test matches for the West Indies.

Chase said his appreciation for Hope extended beyond the numbers, pointing to the captain’s professionalism, preparation and commitment to the team.

“So I’m always happy when I see him do well, because he’s a guy that I know is very professional, puts in the hard work and is the ultimate professional, so when he gets those performances I’m very happy for him.”

Chase also made a significant contribution to Friday’s victory with the ball, taking three wickets while maintaining an economy rate below eight runs per over. He was the only bowler from either team to concede fewer than 10 runs per over.

The victory gave West Indies a major boost on their India tour and highlighted the side’s batting firepower, with Hope leading the successful chase against one of the strongest teams in international cricket.

15 officers complete training under Junior Command and Staff Course

0

Fifteen officers, including three from defence forces across the region, have completed the Guyana Defence Force’s Junior Command and Staff Course Number Thirty-Four (JCSC #34).

The 12-week course brought together officers from the Guyana Defence Force (GDF), the Antigua and Barbuda Defence Force (ABDF) and the St Kitts and Nevis Defence Force (SKNDF). Instruction covered operational planning, battle procedure, military law, leadership, administration, intelligence and resource management.

Practical exercises and scenario-based assessments tested the officers’ ability to apply military doctrine, exercise sound judgement and make decisions in operational settings. The regional participation also facilitated professional exchange among the three defence forces.

Addressing the closing ceremony, the Commanding Officer of the Training Corps, Lieutenant Colonel Dale De Mendonca, described officer development as a strategic imperative for the GDF. He urged the graduates to treat course completion as a milestone in their careers and remain committed to professional growth.

The Colonel General Staff, Colonel Kenlloyd Roberts, MSM, addressed the responsibilities that accompany advancement. He stressed that character, competence and accountability must guide officers’ conduct and performance, particularly as they assume greater authority and lead their subordinates.

“Rank is responsibility,” Colonel Roberts reminded the graduates, emphasising that promotion brings greater expectations of professional conduct and performance.

Lieutenant Randolph Best of the ABDF received the Best Graduating Student award, while Lieutenant Delon Abrams of the GDF was named Runner-Up Graduating Student. Sub-Lieutenant Mohamed Khan of the GDF Coast Guard received the Best Service Paper award, and Captain Kenish Garnette of the SKNDF received the Physical Discipline award.

The Adjutant General, Colonel Lloyd Souvenir; the Commandant of the Guyana National Reserve, Lieutenant Colonel Drumson McCaulay; and other senior officers attended the ceremony.

The JCSC contributes to the GDF’s ability to meet its operational responsibilities by developing officers capable of sound planning, decisive leadership and effective staff work. These competencies are vital to safeguarding Guyana’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Guyana targets end-of-year onion self-sufficiency as cultivation expands to four regions

0

Guyana is aiming to end onion imports by the end of this year as the government expands local production, with Region Nine expected to lead cultivation alongside Regions Two, Five and Six.

Minister of Agriculture Zulfikar Mustapha said the country is targeting approximately 500 acres of onion cultivation as part of efforts to meet domestic demand through locally grown produce.

“At the end of this year we will not import any onions. Region Nine will produce all the bulk of our needs, plus Region Two, Region Five and Region Six,” the minister said.

Guyana began onion production as part of an integrated farming approach aimed at diversifying agricultural output, reducing reliance on imported produce and creating additional income opportunities for farmers.

The initial pilot project in Region Nine, Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo, recorded a harvest valued at more than $15 million, demonstrating the potential for local onion cultivation to contribute to the country’s food supply.

Minister Mustapha said the initiative forms part of a broader crop diversification drive that includes corn, soya, broccoli, cauliflower, carrots and lettuce, among other high-value crops.

He noted that farmers are embracing the integrated farming approach and encouraged interested persons to contact the National Agricultural Research and Extension Institute (NAREI) to explore opportunities to cultivate onions.

The government is prepared to support farmers who wish to enter the sector, including those with relatively small plots of land.

“I have already passed instructions that as long as they have an acre or two, we’ll work along with them. We will try as much as possible to provide the planting material, and we will give them all the technical guidance so that they can come on board,” Minister Mustapha said.

Through the expansion of onion cultivation and support for farmers, the government is seeking to strengthen domestic production capacity and move Guyana closer to meeting its onion needs without depending on imports.

This move forms part of the Caribbean Community’s (CARICOM) target of reducing the region’s food import bill by 25 per cent by 2030. [DPI]

Growing MICE tourism market creates new opportunities for Guyanese businesses

0

Guyana’s expanding meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions (MICE) tourism market is creating new opportunities for local businesses, with more than 20 conferences and exhibitions hosted in 2026.

Director of the Guyana Tourism Authority, Kamrul Baksh, highlighted the sector’s growing contribution to the tourism industry while addressing the State of the Industry Conference (SOTIC) 2026, noting that the benefits extend beyond hotels and conference venues to restaurants, bars and other complementary services.

“When we have the discussions with the restaurants and bars, and the complementary services for tourism, they are experiencing a lot of the benefits, so they want to see more of this market,” he explained.

The growth in conference tourism is providing opportunities for businesses across the wider economy, as delegates require accommodation, transportation, food, entertainment and other services during their stay.

This creates potential for increased sales and income for local entrepreneurs while supporting employment across the tourism and hospitality sectors.

He highlighted that Guyana hosted over 20,000 attendees, including more than 12,000 persons who travelled specifically for conference-related activities.

The market is also creating opportunities for Guyanese tourism operators to showcase the country’s attractions and develop partnerships with international visitors and industry stakeholders.

As Guyana hosts more regional and international events, local businesses can use these engagements to promote their services, establish new business relationships and attract future visitors.

The director noted that Guyana must continue investing in key tourism markets to attract more conferences and exhibitions, while developing additional experiences that encourage delegates to explore the country beyond their official engagements.

He emphasised the importance of providing activities for visitors, pointing to the need for continued product development alongside improvements in accommodation and connectivity.

The expansion of the MICE market is taking place as Guyana’s tourism infrastructure continues to develop, with close to 6,000 hotel rooms projected by the end of 2026 and additional hotels expected to enter the market after this year.

The growth in accommodation capacity, together with increased air connectivity, is expected to strengthen Guyana’s ability to host larger events and accommodate more visitors, while creating further opportunities for businesses to benefit from tourism expenditure. [DPI]
