Guyana expanding sustainable tourism certification

Guyana expanding sustainable tourism certification

Guyana is certifying tourism businesses as part of its ongoing efforts to strengthen its position as a sustainable and eco-tourism destination.

The initiative is expected to build on the work already undertaken by several community-based lodges, private operators and hotels that have pursued sustainability certification.

Director of the Guyana Tourism Authority (GTA) Kamrul Baksh

Speaking at the World Tourism Day 2026, held under the theme “Building a Sustainable Future for Guyana Tourism”, Director of the Guyana Tourism Authority (GTA) Kamrul Baksh pointed to Guyana’s longstanding focus on nature, culture, community-based tourism and environmental sustainability.

He noted that these elements have helped distinguish the country’s tourism product.

Baksh added that the country is now at a stage where these efforts can be scaled up through formal certification and greater participation from tourism businesses.

“If we could have the entire ecosystem of all elements becoming certified, I think that will certainly strengthen Guyana’s overall status in this arena,” he said.

An Expression of Interest was recently issued to gauge the industry’s willingness to participate in the certification programme.

The director said the response has extended beyond lodges and resorts, with businesses from different regions expressing an interest in understanding the requirements for certification.

Several tourism operators have already pursued certification, including Surama Eco-Lodge, Rock View Lodge, Waikin Ranch and Saddle Mountain Ranch.

The Marriott Hotel has also participated, signalling growing interest among coastal operators as well as hinterland businesses.

Community-based tourism remains an important part of the country’s strategy, particularly in hinterland and riverine communities where tourism has traditionally been closely linked to the environment, culture and local livelihoods.

In addition, the sustainability drive is expected to complement Guyana’s wider Low Carbon Development Strategy and conservation agenda.

As a result, the government is finalising a national tourism policy, with sustainable tourism expected to be a fundamental component.

The policy is expected to examine ways of expanding sustainability through certification, training, international marketing and other initiatives.

“Sustainability is not an afterthought,” Baksh said, adding that it is being consciously considered at the governance level and translated into programmes across the sector.

Despite the progress, he acknowledged that more tourism stakeholders will have to be brought on board.

Workshops and sensitisation sessions are therefore expected to help operators better understand the certification process and how sustainable practices can be incorporated into their businesses.

This is being guided by three key considerations, quality, safety and sustainability, as Guyana seeks to provide visitors with experiences that can compete internationally while protecting the country’s natural and cultural assets.

“Other destinations are actually looking to diversify, especially within the Caribbean, looking to diversify their product, moving away from the mass and the typical product,” he said.

Guyana is expected to further highlight its approach to sustainable tourism during the upcoming State of the Tourism Industry Conference, where discussions will focus on the development and future of tourism across the Caribbean.

$1M Fine, Six Months In Jail If Your Animals Stray Onto Runway Spaces — GCAA Warns – HGPTV – Guyana’s Nightly News and Entertainment Channel

GEORGETOWN, GUYANA — Livestock and domestic animal owners across Guyana could face severe criminal penalties—including a maximum fine of $1 million (GYD) and up to six months’ imprisonment—if their animals are found straying onto active aerodrome runways.

The warning was issued by the Guyana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) following an uptick in reports of cattle, horses, dogs, and other livestock trespassing across active airstrips and aerodrome lands nationwide.

The statutory aviation regulator cautioned that stray animals on active runways pose an unacceptable threat to air transport, creating catastrophic hazards for landing and departing aircraft, flight crews, and the travelling public.

Strict Liability Under the Civil Aviation Act 2018

The GCAA emphasized that the law enforces strict accountability regardless of whether livestock are intentionally led onto aerodrome property or simply left unattended due to reckless grazing practices:

  • Statutory Prohibition: Under Section 83(1) of the Civil Aviation Act 2018, any person who unlawfully trespasses on aerodrome land, or causes or permits an animal to trespass on such premises, commits an indictable statutory offense.
  • Penal Sanctions: A summary conviction under the statute carries a mandatory punitive fine of up to $1,000,000 (GYD) and a custodial sentence of six months in prison.
  • Criminal Liability for Negligence: The Authority warned owners that claiming lack of knowledge will not serve as a legal defense; owners are liable whether animals are deliberately released or negligently allowed to roam near unfenced or demarcated airstrips.

Aerodromes Designated as Critical Infrastructure

The GCAA stressed that interior airstrips and coastal aerodromes serve as lifeline corridors connecting remote hinterland communities to administrative and medical centers, making uninterrupted operations vital:

  • Unacceptable Aviation Hazard: Animal incursions during high-speed take-offs or landings can cause catastrophic landing-gear collapse, engine ingestion, runway excursions, or fatal crashes.
  • Coordinated Law Enforcement Action: The GCAA confirmed that it is partnering with the Guyana Police Force (GPF) and regional administrative bodies to track animal branding marks, identify offending owners, impound stray livestock, and pursue summary convictions in the magistrate courts.
  • Community Vigilance: The regulator appealed to residents and farmers living adjacent to airstrips to recognize aerodromes as safety-critical infrastructure, maintain perimeter fencing, and report unauthorized access.

Members of the public who observe stray animals on runway lands or witness breaches of aerodrome boundaries are urged to alert local authorities or contact the GCAA anonymously via its dedicated 24/7 hotline at 608-4222.

UK PM Burnham wants to scrap first past the post electoral system

LIVERPOOL, England, (Reuters) – Prime Minister Andy Burnham said today the Labour Party will contest the next election with a manifesto commitment to change the electoral system, ‌after he announced he was establishing a national commission to look at reform.

Burnham has long supported Britain ditching its first-past-the-post system, which requires a party to win at least 326 seats out of 650 to secure a majority in parliament, in favour of proportional representation.

“We will contest the next election with a manifesto commitment to change the electoral system,” he told the annual Labour Party conference.

The next election is due in 2029 and Burnham said he would invite all political parties to take part in the commission’s work and seek cross-party backing for reforms.

Criticising the country’s recent turbulent politics — he is the seventh prime minister in 10 years — he said the current system was ‌divisive because it meant a party could find themselves in government with 30% of the vote or less.

“I want to underpin our plan for Britain with a new politics,” he said, adding that while the changes would be difficult and not universally liked, they were needed.

Local elections in May underlined the fracturing of Britain’s traditional two-party system, with the once-dominant Labour and Conservative parties losing votes to right-wing Reform UK, the left-wing Green Party and nationalists in Scotland and Wales.

In a 2011 referendum in Britain, a proposal to bring in a preferential voting system, known as alternative vote, was rejected.

Haiti gang retaliation leaves at least 11 dead after security operation

Men of the local defence force stand guard in a cemetery during a funeral service for people killed in an armed gang attack on August 23, in Kenscoff, Haiti, Sept 2, 2026.

PORT-AU-PRINCE,  (Reuters) – At least 11 people were killed yesterday in Haiti’s central Artibonite region by gang members after a deadly security operation, the local mayor ‌said.

The attack is the latest reprisal against residents in areas contested by armed groups, particularly in the farming heartland of Artibonite.

Earlier in the day, a Sri Lankan unit of the UN-backed Gang Suppression Force, a multinational mission meant to tackle rampant violence, pushed back gang members who set up illegal toll points, Mayor Hubert Ceneac told Radio Kiskeya.

The operation left three gang members dead, the force said in a statement.

The mayor said the UN-backed force only stayed in the area for a few hours, before returning to the town of Gonaives where they are based.

“The bandits in retaliation attacked…they killed and burned homes,” Ceneac said, adding ‌that between 11 and 12 people had been killed.

Rosy Ducena, who heads the National Human Rights Defense Network, said the total death toll and damages were not yet clear.

“However, we have already received a report of a single family that lost several members,” she added.

Ceneac said the area was a stronghold of the Kokorat San Ras gang. Haiti’s security crisis has worsened beyond the capital Port-au-Prince as gangs have expanded their reach.

The Gang Suppression Force’s mandate is set to expire this week if not extended by the UN Security Council.
