HGP NIGHTLY NEWS – The transformation of Thomas Street Avenue between Lamaha and Church streets is progressing, with works now underway to reshape the corridor as the first project being implemented under the government’s Healthy Streets Initiative.

Local Government and Regional Development Minister Priya Manickchand inspected the site on Wednesday alongside representatives of the King’s Foundation and government technical officials to assess the progress of the works.

The project is expected to introduce changes aimed at making the avenue greener, safer and more functional as part of a wider effort to improve public spaces across Georgetown.

The Thomas Street project was designed by the King’s Foundation in collaboration with the Government of Guyana and is the first development being undertaken under President Irfaan Ali’s Healthy Streets Initiative.

During the inspection, officials examined the work completed so far and discussed the next stages of implementation. Manickchand expressed satisfaction with the progress of the project, according to the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development.

She was joined by King’s Foundation representatives Leslie Ohomele and Samuel Delvin, Permanent Secretary Miguel Choo-Kang, Deputy Permanent Secretary Godfrey Munroe, Office of the President Project Coordinator Lucina Singh, Chief Engineer Raul Boyer and other engineers and project staff.

The government says the wider initiative is intended to improve the functionality and appearance of Georgetown’s public spaces while creating safer and more people-focused urban areas.

DEFENCE QUESTIONS ABDUCTION CASE AS ‘DEMON’ BROTHER GETS $1M BAIL – HGPTV – Guyana’s Nightly News and Entertainment Channel

    0

HGP NIGHTLY NEWS – Attorneys representing Jimmol Murphy have challenged the foundation of the police’s abduction case involving two missing Surinamese men, arguing that investigators have not produced evidence showing the men were forcibly taken or that Murphy was even at the scene when they disappeared.

Murphy, the brother of Mark “Demon” Cromwell, appeared before Magistrate Shareefa Parks at the Fort Wellington Magistrate’s Court, where he was charged with abduction under the Kidnapping Act.

The charge stems from the disappearance of two Surinamese nationals who were allegedly abducted at Rosignol, West Bank Berbice, on August 29, 2026. Murphy is represented by attorneys-at-law Siand Dhurjon, Mark Waldron and Meshon Persaud.

The prosecution strongly objected to bail, but Dhurjon argued that the evidence presented so far does not disclose that an offence under the legislation occurred.

Central to the defence’s argument is Murphy’s claim that he was in Georgetown and Houston at the material time. Dhurjon told the court that police have produced no evidence to rebut that alibi.

The defence also challenged the circumstances surrounding the disappearance of the two men, maintaining that the information presently available indicates that they voluntarily and peacefully entered a vehicle.

Dhurjon further argued that there is no evidence at this stage establishing that anything untoward subsequently happened to them. He suggested that the men could have travelled onwards to Brazil or Venezuela, arguing that persons passing through Guyana sometimes leave the country using unofficial routes.

The claims were advanced by Murphy’s attorneys as part of their case for bail and have not been determined as facts by the court. After hearing submissions from both sides, Magistrate Parks granted Murphy bail in the sum of $1 million.

Murphy was ordered to surrender his passport and must report to the Police Major Crimes Unit every Friday as part of his bail conditions. The whereabouts of the two Surinamese men remain the subject of the police investigation.

    Ms Ingrid Innes

Former Insurance Corporation of Barbados Limited chief executive officer Ingrid Innes has been fined US$7,000 and sentenced to time served after pleading guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit money laundering.

The 70-year-old, who has stage three pancreatic cancer, avoided further imprisonment after District Judge Kiyo Matsumoto took her medical condition into account.

In addition to the fine and a US$100 court assessment fee, Mrs. Innes, who was born and raised in Guyana, has been barred from entering the United States.

The court was also asked to examine assets held in her husband’s name, including a house valued at US$1.3 million and an investment property valued at US$500,000.

No restitution was ordered, as no victim had come forward.

Mrs. Innes was charged in connection with a bribery scheme involving former government minister Donville Inniss.

Inniss was convicted in the United States in 2020 and served two years in federal prison.

Barbados Today reported that during Inniss’s 2020 federal trial in Brooklyn, New York, Millar testified that she generated two false internal invoices.

The invoices – one for US$16 536.73 in 2015 and another for US$20 000 in 2016 – were used to disguise payments that were ultimately channelled to Inniss’ US-based dental company, Crystal Dental Lab.

According to Innes, a Canadian national, when she was asked to approve the payments to Inniss, she was told they were for consulting fees.

She was also told that in Barbados it was not necessarily illegal or unusual for members of parliament to own businesses, including consulting companies, or to accept campaign contributions from government suppliers.

Man on $1m bail over abduction of Surinamese men

    Jimol Murphy

A 33-year-old driver and contractor has been charged with abduction in connection with an incident at Rosignol, West Bank Berbice, and was granted $1 million bail when he appeared in court today.

Jimol Murphy, of Vigilance, East Coast Demerara, was charged with abduction.

Murphy was arrested on September 25, 2026, in connection with the alleged abduction of two Surinamese men  on August 29, 2026, at Rosignol.

He appeared virtually today before Magistrate Shareefah Parks, who presided from the Fort Wellington Magistrate’s Court. The charge was read to Murphy, who was not required to enter a plea.

Murphy was represented by attorneys Meshonn Persaud and Siand Dhurjon.

The court granted him bail in the sum of $1,000,000.

The matter was adjourned until October 19, 2026.

The case concerns the disappearance of Surinamese men Siegiëllo Lorenzo Van Dalen, 27, and Derryl Danillo Bont, 28.

Van Dalen and Bont have been missing since late August. In a September 9 notice, Surinamese police said they left their homes on August 28 in a white Toyota Vitz and travelled to Nickerie. The following day, they left the vehicle at Clara Sluis and crossed to Guyana by boat between 11 am and 1 pm, subsequently entering a taxi believed to have been a black station wagon.

An initial September 2 report by Waterkant had quoted Bont’s family as saying they last heard from him on Saturday morning, after which his telephone was switched off. They believed two friends who had been with him were also unreachable.

Drivers of fallen shipping container trailers being charged – traffic chief

    0

Last Updated on Thursday, 1 October 2026, 17:49 by Writer

The drivers of fallen shipping container trailer trucks are being charged for faulty loading or unsecured containers, the Guyana Police Force (GPF) Traffic Chief, Assistant Commissioner Mahendra Singh said Thursday.

“Some of these people, the dangerous practice which they engage in is what is actually leading to these issues that are occurring. That is to say the unserviceable locks or no locks at all so that is in itself has to do with maintenance of the vehicle,” he said.

Mr Singh confirmed that several drivers of those haulage vehicles had been charged after yet another encountered problems, this time at the corner of Sussex and Lombard streets, Georgetown.

He said the Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic Act provides for faulty packing of load, in those cases faultily packed shipping containers on the trailers.

Mr Singh said drivers could be also be found culpable of poor manoeuvrability by taking too narrow or deep turns, resulting in the capsizing of the containers.

“Even (if) that is the case, you still would investigate the dangerous or careless driving that led to the trailer capsizing for the faulty packing to see whether the locks or pins were not affixed to the container at the time or not serviceable,” he told Demerara Waves Online News.

The traffic chief said, as part of the police force’s education exercises, sensitisation sessions have been held with the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Shipping Association of Guyana, and operators of the shipping container trailers.

He said notices were also placed in the newspapers and on social media platforms.

Chinese celebrate 77 years of People’s Republic, advance modernization with confidence

    0

BEIJING, Oct. 1 (Xinhua) — Hours before dawn on Thursday, Tian’anmen Square was already alive with anticipation. More than 100,000 people from across China gathered at the heart of Beijing to watch the national flag-raising ceremony as the People’s Republic of China (PRC) marked its 77th founding anniversary.

At around 6:10 a.m., the national anthem echoed across the square. People sang in unison, their eyes following the five-starred red flag as it rose into the sky. For many, the moment brought tears.

When a large flock of white doves soared into the air, cheers and applause erupted from the crowd, filling the square with jubilation.

Children waved national flags as they ran about, young people chatted and laughed with national flag stickers on their cheeks, and older visitors in bright, festive clothes smiled for group photos in front of an 18-meter-high flower basket at the center of the square.

The festive mood extended far beyond the capital. Across the country, many streets were lined with national flags and floral displays, while residential communities were adorned with lanterns and traditional Chinese knots.

“Every time I pass these flower displays, I feel inspired,” said Gao Feng, a food delivery rider who crossed Chang’an Avenue, a major thoroughfare through central Beijing.

“I truly believe that if everyone does their job well and takes things one step at a time, we can build a better future,” Gao said.

On Wednesday, Chinese President Xi Jinping and other senior leaders paid tribute to fallen heroes at a Martyrs’ Day ceremony, honoring those who sacrificed their lives for the liberation of the Chinese people and the development of the PRC.

China also presented the 2026 Chinese Government Friendship Award to 50 foreign experts in recognition of their contributions to China’s development and to friendship and cooperation between China and other countries.

    REMARKABLE PROGRESS

On this very day 77 years ago, the late Chinese leader Mao Zedong stood on Tian’anmen Rostrum and declared the birth of the PRC, marking a watershed moment in Chinese history.

In the decades since, China has risen from a poor country to the world’s second-largest economy and a major country striding toward the center of the world stage.

By 2025, China’s GDP had surpassed 140 trillion yuan (about 19.6 trillion U.S. dollars), accounting for about one-sixth of global GDP, while the country continued to contribute roughly 30 percent of global economic growth.

Economic growth has translated into higher incomes and longer lives. Per capita disposable income rose from just 49.7 yuan in 1949 to 43,377 yuan in 2025, while average life expectancy more than doubled, from 35 years to 79.25 years.

The country has eliminated absolute poverty and established the world’s largest systems for education, social security and healthcare. Over the past decades, China has undergone one of the world’s largest and fastest urbanization processes. Once largely agrarian, China is now home to about twice as many urban residents as rural residents.

China has become a global manufacturing powerhouse, producing everything from new-energy vehicles to industrial robots and advanced chips. In 2025, output of new-energy vehicles exceeded 16 million units, while production of industrial robots and integrated circuits rose by 28 percent and 10.9 percent, respectively.

It has emerged as one of the world’s fastest-rising forces in innovation, making major advances in cutting-edge fields such as artificial intelligence, biomedicine and quantum technology. It has achieved breakthroughs in both land-based and sea-based rocket recovery technologies.

These changes have also shaped the way China engages with the wider world. More people around the world are gaining a deeper appreciation of an increasingly innovative and culturally vibrant China through firsthand encounters. At the same time, its experience has broadened the paths for developing countries to achieve modernization.

“We take immense pride in the extraordinary achievements of New China and have full confidence in the bright prospects of Chinese modernization,” Xi, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, said at a reception on the eve of the National Day.

    JOURNEY AHEAD

For visitors, the giant flower basket at the heart of Tian’anmen Square is a backdrop for holiday photos. And far more than that, it tells a story about where China is heading.

This year marks the beginning of the 15th Five-Year Plan period, which runs from 2026 to 2030. The basket features 15 types of floral designs and five types of fruit, symbolizing hopes for abundant blossoms and fruitful results over the next five years.

Beyond the flower basket, 10 three-dimensional flower installations line Chang’an Avenue, bringing themes such as new quality productive forces, harmony between people and nature, urban renewal and beautiful rural areas to life. Together, they highlight some of China’s development priorities for the next five years.

Those priorities are backed by concrete goals. The plan aims to lay the groundwork for doubling per capita GDP from its 2020 level by 2035, while accelerating breakthroughs in core technologies in key fields. It also calls for raising average years of schooling among the working-age population to 11.7 years and life expectancy to 80 years, while further strengthening China’s soft power.

The 15th Five-Year Plan period represents a crucial window for laying a solid foundation toward China’s 2035 goal of basically achieving socialist modernization and making decisive progress in that direction.

The plan has dedicated sections on Hong Kong and Macao, outlining measures to support the two regions in better integrating into and contributing to the country’s overall development. In September, Hong Kong unveiled its first Five-Year Plan, while Macao released its third in August, both aligned with the national development strategy.

Since the beginning of this year, the Chinese economy has maintained progress despite pressure and achieved innovation-driven and high-quality development while demonstrating strong resilience and vitality, Xi said at Wednesday’s reception.

“As long as we remain confident, stay focused on our goals and move forward steadily, step by step, success will ultimately belong to the great CPC, the great Chinese people and the great PRC,” Xi added.

    0

Thirty-three-year-old Jimol Murphy, the brother of US-sanctioned Mark “Demon” Cromwell, has been placed on $1 million bail for the alleged abduction of two Surinamese nationals.

Murphy appeared before Magistrate Shareefa Parks at the Fort Wellington Magistrate’s Court, where the charge was read to him. Police stated that he abducted 28-year-old Van Dalen Lorenzo and 29-year-old Derryl Danillo on August 29, 2026, at Rosignol, West Bank Berbice.

Murphy was represented by attorneys-at-law Siand Dhurjon, Mark Waldron, and Meshon Persaud.

    The two missing men

According to reports, the prosecution objected to bail, but Dhurjon argued that the evidence presented did not establish that an offense under the law had been committed.

He reportedly maintained that police had produced no evidence to disprove Murphy’s alibi that he was in Georgetown and Houston at the time of the alleged incident. Dhurjon further submitted that there was currently no evidence indicating that anything untoward had happened to the two men.

Murphy was eventually granted $1 million bail and will make his next court appearance on October 19. The arrest of Murphy resulted in unrest at Vigilance, East Coast Demerara, over a two-day period, which saw the burning of materials, thus blocking the main thoroughfare.
