GFF hands over equipment to kick off Concacaf grassroots pilot scheme – News Room Guyana

0

The Guyana Football Federation has taken another step in its push to bolster grassroots football after handing over essential equipment to four regional associations taking part in the Concacaf Bigger Game Academy pilot scheme.

The kit and equipment were officially presented to regional representatives at the GFF National Training Centre in Providence ahead of a 10-week programme for boys and girls aged six to 12.

The pilot will run across four venues, with the Upper Demerara Football Association basing their activities at Silver City Field, while the Georgetown FA operates out of C Field, Sophia.

East Demerara FA will stage sessions at Buxton Ground, while East Bank FA will host games at Diamond Playfield.

Designed to strengthen football at community level, the Concacaf initiative combines equipment support with coach and volunteer education to deliver structured weekend sessions. The handover follows an initial training phase in September, where coaches took part in dedicated workshops before leading a youth festival at Providence.

“Grassroots development is central to the future of football in Guyana,” said GFF technical director Bryan Joseph. “The programme provides an introduction to the game for children and offers structured and organised opportunities for them to fall in love with football.

“Initiatives like the Concacaf Bigger Game Academy help us expand opportunities for young players and build a more sustainable pathway for football development across the country.”

The GFF will work alongside each association throughout the 10-week block to offer monitoring support, safeguarding oversight, and operational guidance.

Each regional body will submit a comprehensive performance report at the conclusion of the pilot, detailing participation figures, outcomes, and challenges.

Federation officials hope the data gathered from the pilot will pave the way to expanding the initiative across further regional associations nationwide. (Modified Press Release)

Guyanese mother, son honoured at 2026 Caribbean Global Awards in London – News Room Guyana

0

Guyanese finance professional and business leader Dr. Alista Bishop returned to the Caribbean Global Awards in London one year after receiving the Global Leadership Award, this time earning the Sustainable Finance Award alongside a special family milestone as her 13-year-old son, Xavi Bishop, was honoured with the Junior Youth Community Impact Award.

The awards were presented on September 26, 2026, at The Cumberland Hotel in London, during the Caribbean Global Awards, which recognises Caribbean individuals making an impact across professional, business, leadership and community spheres.

For Dr. Bishop, the evening represented both a continuation of her own professional journey and a proud new chapter for her family.

“Returning to the Caribbean Global Awards a year after receiving the Global Leadership Award was already meaningful, but to return this year and share the evening with my son made it completely different,” Dr. Bishop said.

“Receiving the Sustainable Finance Award is an honour that reflects years of work, learning and commitment within the finance profession. But as a mother, watching Xavi receive his own recognition at just 13 years old was one of the proudest moments of the evening.”

Dr. Bishop’s Sustainable Finance Award recognises her contribution to finance, corporate leadership and the advancement of responsible and sustainable approaches to business and economic development.

Her career has spanned accounting, finance, corporate governance, regional business leadership and professional service, alongside continued involvement in community, youth and development initiatives.

The evening also placed a spotlight on the next generation, with Xavi receiving the Junior Youth Community Impact Award in recognition of his contribution to community-focused activities and youth service.

“As parents, we speak to our children about success, but I also want Xavi to understand that success comes with a responsibility to contribute to the lives of others,” Dr. Bishop said.

“He has grown up seeing service, leadership and community involvement as part of everyday life, but this recognition is his own. I hope it encourages him to continue finding ways to contribute, to remain grounded and to understand that you are never too young to make a positive difference.”

The joint recognition created a memorable mother-and-son moment for the Bishops, with both receiving awards representing different stages of leadership and impact.

For Dr. Bishop, returning to the same event one year after her previous recognition also provided an opportunity to reflect on continued growth.

“To return a year later and be recognised in another area of my work is something I am deeply grateful for,” she said. “Awards are never the reason we do the work, but they can be a reminder to keep going, to keep improving and to continue using whatever platform we have to contribute.”

The 2026 Caribbean Global Awards therefore became more than another professional milestone for Dr. Bishop. It marked a moment in which professional achievement, motherhood and community service came together on the same stage.

“Last year I left London grateful for the recognition I received,” Dr. Bishop added. “This year, I leave even more grateful because I got to share that stage and that experience with my son.”

CCTV cameras yielding results in crime investigations – Min Walrond

Guyana’s expanding ‘Safe Country’ initiative continues to deliver significant results in the fight against crime, helping police identify suspects, gather evidence and move investigations forward more efficiently.

Speaking on the ‘Starting Point’ Podcast during Sunday’s broadcast, Minister of Home Affairs Oneidge Walrond said approximately 800 closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras had been installed specifically as part of the Safe Country initiative over the past five years, with coverage extending to most regions.

Minister of Home Affairs Oneidge Walrond on Starting Point

“We have seen tremendous results, positive results from the cameras,” the minister stated.

According to her, the footage captured by the cameras is proving useful to investigators, providing visual evidence that can help establish what occurred during an incident and identify persons involved.

She pointed to footage of an attack on a young woman, allegedly involving a Ministry of Home Affairs employee, as an example of how cameras could provide evidence for investigations.

Speaking from experience as a former magistrate, the minister stated that cases previously depended heavily on eyewitness accounts and could involve lengthy trials.

“People can feel a sense of satisfaction that they don’t have to languish and wait for years for their matters to be resolved.”

Facial recognition technology is also being used to help track people of interest and identify locations where they might be sheltered.

“We have more cameras being deployed, more training for police officers in terms of intelligence-led crime fighting, as opposed to just trying to solve a crime after it happens,” Minister Walrond emphasised.

Former PNCR Leader Robert Corbin passes away at 78

Former People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) leader and Opposition Leader Robert Corbin died in hospital today, aged 78.

His death was confirmed by PNCR leader Aubrey Norton, who described it as “an irreplaceable loss to our party”.

Norton said Corbin was the only person to have served as chairman of the party’s youth arm, General Secretary and later leader of the PNCR.

He credited Corbin with advancing coalition politics, pointing to the PNCR’s partnership with One Guyana, the subsequent formation of A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) and the eventual APNU+AFC coalition, which entered government in 2015.

Norton said Corbin was a key player in efforts to bring political forces together and deserved recognition for his contribution.

Corbin, an attorney-at-law and former Deputy Prime Minister, led the PNCR from 2003 until 2012, when David Granger succeeded him.

He was married to Carol Corbin, a former chairperson of the Public Procurement Commission. His daughter, Justice Fidela Corbin-Lincoln, is a High Court judge.

The PNCR has issued the following statement:

THE PASSING OF ROBERT HERMAN ORLANDO CORBIN, CCH

The People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) and A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) are saddened by the passing of it its long-serving member, former National Chairman of the Young Socialist Movement (YSM), former General Secretary and Leader of the PNCR, Mr. Robert Herman Orlando Corbin, CCH, popularly called “RHO”.

Comrade Corbin served the PNCR and Guyana with distinction as Parliamentary Secretary, Minister and Deputy Prime Minister. He was an astute, loyal, disciplined and hardworking member of the PNCR.

Comrade Corbin was a shrewd politician, an avid promoter of coalition politics that is credited with leading the PNCR into coalition politics that eventually resulted in the 2015 APNU+AFC Coalition, and its concomitant victory.

Notwithstanding his strong commitment to politics, he was able to operate in the professional realm and became a lawyer and continued to serve his Party. During his illness he continued to give advice to our Party.

Comrade Corbin’s death is an irreplaceable loss to the PNCR and he will surely be missed.

May his soul rest in peace as we continue to benefit from his lasting contributions to our Party and Guyana. ‎
