Knight Riders keep CPL campaign alive with win over Falcons

The Trinbago Knight Riders kept their Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League campaign alive with a nine wicket win over the Antigua & Barbuda Falcons in the Eliminator match.

The Falcons had a brilliant partnership of 108 between Andries Gous and Amir Jangoo but a late flurry of wickets saw the Knight Riders keep them to a total they could chase. The stars for the Trinidadian franchise were Nicholas Pooran and Alex Hales who both made fifties as the Knight Riders won with relative ease.

In the Falcons innings, Jangoo and Gous both fell within the space of two balls shortly after passing their fifties. Both batters fell to the bowling of Usman Tariq who was once again miserly with his bowling, claiming 2/19 off his four overs. The Falcons went from 129/1 with four overs to go to 161/8 at the end of their innings as Saurabh Netravalkar and Andre Russell picked up wickets at the death.

The Falcons would have been disappointed to not post a bigger target given the platform they had set. However, when Colin Munro, the Knight Riders leading run scorer going into this match, fell early to the bowling of Rahkeem Cornwall there was hope that they could claim victory. But from the point of the Munro wicket to the end of the match it was the Hales and Pooran show as the two made light work of the Falcons total.

No Falcons bowler found a way to keep the scoring under control by the halfway stage of the chase the equation had come down to just over a run a ball needed. With the pressure of the big game fading Hales and Pooran controlled the chase brilliantly to keep their dreams of a first CPL title since 2020 alive.

Pooran finished on 90 and Hales on 54 with both batters not out at the end of the innings in an unbroken second wicket partnership worth 143. These two players showing this sort of form as the knockout stages gets underway is a real boost for the Knight Riders who came into this game in the back of three consecutive losses.

This loss means the Falcons will head home having made the knockout stages for the first time in their history. The Knight Riders will now face the loser of the Qualifier 1 match between Guyana Amazon Warriors and Saint Lucia Kings which takes place at the Guyana National Stadium in Providence on Wednesday night. Amazon Warriors bowl into CPL Finals

Amazon Warriors bowl into CPL Finals

The Guyana Amazon Warriors stormed into the 2025 Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League (CPL) final on the back of an all-round bowling display that saw them restrict the Saint Lucia Kings to 143 all out to win Qualifier 1 by 14 runs. The Amazon Warriors have advanced to their eighth final and will now wait to see who wins the Qualifier 2 match between the Kings and the Trinbago Knight Riders on Friday night to see who they will face in the final.

The evening began with the Kings winning the toss and choosing to bowl first. A decent start with the bat saw the Warriors reach 45/1 at the end of the Powerplay but regular wickets throughout their innings meant it always felt like the Kings were well in the game. New recruit, Tymal Mills claimed 2/28 on his CPL debut but it was Tabraiz Shamsi who did the most damage, claiming three wickets to keep his spot at the top of the Kings wicket taking list.

Shai Hope was a steadying force for the Warriors as he continued his very good 2025 season with 32 from 29 as wickets fell around him. Some big blows from Dwaine Pretorius and Romario Shepherd took the Warriors to 157 all out, a total that seemed like it might not be enough based on what has taken place on this pitch over the Guyana leg.

Those fears for the Warriors were quickly put to bed as they ripped apart the Kings top order as the Saint Lucian side crumbled to 12/3 and then 48/7. With the heart of their batting line up gone it became an impossible task for the Kings.

A stand of 37 between Khary Pierre and Alzarri Joseph gave some respectability to the Kings total but with the rate continuing to climb it was not long before another wicket fell, with Joseph caught in the deep for 14. Pierre went on to make his maiden T20 fifty and Mills made a career best 30 but the damage had been done earlier in the innings.

Imran Tahir finished with figures of 2/22 as he cemented his place as this year’s most destructive bowler with 19 wickets. Gudakesh Motie claimed 4/30 as the spin duo took complete control of this match.

The Warriors have now won three games on the bounce and will go straight through to Sunday’s final. For the Kings, their CPL is not over yet, having finished top of the table they will get another shot to make the final when they play the Knight Riders on Friday under lights. Local singers file lawsuit in New York against One Communications over “Guyana” song

Local singers file lawsuit in New York against One Communications over “Guyana” song

Guyanese singer, Jackie Hanover aka Jackie Jaxx and calypsonian Ivan “D’iVan” Harry have filed a US$1.6 Million lawsuit in New York against the One Communications company, formerly GTT, over the reported unauthorized use of their song, “Guyana”, at the One Communications brand launching earlier this month.

At the event, the song was performed by local singer, Nikeita. She is also named in the lawsuit.

The lawsuit alleges that One Communications and Nikeita infringed on the copyrights of Jackie Jaxx and D’Ivan by performing, broadcasting and commercially exploiting their song without obtaining the necessary permissions.

The plaintiffs contend that One Communications gained significant economic benefits by infringing their copyright protection.

In a statement, Jackie Jaxx said she hopes that the lawsuit will force corporate entities to show respect for song writers and content creators by implementing proper copyright clearance for all works used at their events.

It was noted that the lawsuit was filed after efforts to resolve the dispute failed. Jaxx and D’Ivan had written to One Communications demanding $50 million for the unauthorized use of the song at the event. The company was reportedly offering the two singers the talent fee of $300,000 each after they complained about the song being sung by Nikeita without their permission.

The lawsuit was filed in the Eastern New York District Court by Attorney Vivian Williams.

In a statement over the weekend, One Communications said it acknowledges the alleged copyright infringement claim and is currently conducting a thorough investigation.

The company said while it would not comment on legal matters, it would like to emphasize its commitment to supporting Guyanese artistes and the creative industry.

The One Communications rebrand launching took place at the Marriott Parking lot.

Stage set for Saturday’s International Music Festival at Providence Stadium

Three of dancehall’s current hottest acts, Masicka, Kranium and Shaneil Muir, are set to make their return to Guyana this Saturday, 15th November for the highly anticipated Premier International Music Festival.

The event is being hosted by De Sheriff’s Entertainment, Dream Team Entertainment and Team Rodney.

The three promotion groups out of Linden have joined forces to bring together a dancehall show like no other, the organisers have said.

In addition to the Jamaican dancehall artistes, several Guyanese artistes will also grace the stage at the Providence Stadium, along with Super Ray and Stitchie One Man Bands and several local deejays.

According to Lincoln Zephyr, who is part of the organizing team, Saturday’s event was well planned and will be well executed. He said patrons can expect a night of highly charged entertainment from the beginning of the show to the very end. He said De Sherrif’s Entertainment, Dream Team and Team Rodney, are known for hosting some of the best organized shows and events for the Linden Town Week celebrations.

The organisers, he noted, have now decided to widen their reach and offer the rest of the country the same high quality event that supporters have enjoyed over the years in Linden.

All of the international acts will be in Guyana by Friday and are expected to make radio and television appearances.

Mr. Zephyr reminded that a lucky ticket holder will drive home with a new Toyota Premio car, so he encouraged patrons to not only get their tickets early, but hold on to their ticket stubs at the show as the drawing will be done on the same night.  Tickets are available at a number of outlets across the country. The organizing teams have offered thanks to their list of sponsors for the support in hosting the event.

Guyana to welcome CARIFESTA home in 2027

The Caribbean Festival of Arts (CARIFESTA) will return to Guyana in 2027, the Government of Guyana has announced.

Earlier this week, Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Charles Ramson Jr, and Minister within the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, Steven Jacobs, met and held discussions with the CARICOM Secretary General, Dr. Carla Barnett and made the announcement.

The event, which will bring together the richness of Caribbean Culture will take place from the 8th -17th October, 2027.

Reminding that CARIFESTA began in Guyana in 1972, Minister Ramson noted the significance of Guyana once against welcoming the region for the cultural showcase.

He said “Guyana holds a unique place in the history of CARIFESTA, having hosted the inaugural festival in 1972. To welcome CARIFESTA XVI back to the ‘Land of Many Waters’ for the third time is both a tremendous privilege and an important opportunity to showcase the splendour of this unique Caribbean civilisation.”

The Culture Minister noted that Guyana’s mission will be to deliver a festival that celebrates the diversity, creativity, and shared identity of the Region, while strengthening the bonds that unite the people of the Caribbean.

“CARIFESTA XVI will provide a platform to showcase the richness of our regional art, music, dance, theatre, and literature, alongside other forms of cultural expression, while creating opportunities for greater international cultural exchange, collaboration, and exposure for our artists and cultural practitioners,” he said.

Ramson said it is hoped that CARIFESTA XVI will open doors for the creative industries, provide greater opportunities for young people and cultural practitioners, and demonstrate the depth, diversity and excellence of Caribbean talent.

He said “we want CARIFESTA XVI to be a celebration of where we have come from and where Caribbean civilisation is going. CARICOM Secretary-General Dr Carla Barnett has pledged the Secretariat’s full support for Guyana’s preparations.

Police discover over 72 pounds of cocaine after driver abandons vehicle on Ituni trail

The Guyana Police Force is on the hunt for the driver of a motor pick-up vehicle who abandoned the vehicle leaving several parcels of cocaine behind.

The incident occurred on Friday at Five Miles along the Ituni Trail in the Upper Demerara River area. The abandoned cocaine weighs 72.1 pounds, according to a Police statement.

The Police explained that a group of ranks were conducting an operation at around 5pm on Friday evening along the Ituni trail, when the ranks observed a motor pickup traveling out of the trail.

The Police reported that after the driver of the pick-up spotted the Police ranks, he stopped the vehicle and escaped into the nearby bushes leaving the vehicle behind.

The Police did not indicate whether any of its ranks chased after the man, but said a search of the abandoned vehicle unearthed a bag just behind the driver’s seat with 30 large parcels in it.

An examination of those parcels revealed the parcels of cocaine.

The cocaine and the vehicle were both confiscated and lodged at the Mackenzie Police Station in Linden. The investigations into the discovery are ongoing. There have been no arrests so far.

Two days before this latest bust, the Police found over $455,000 in cash and 78 pounds of marijuana during an operation in the same area. One person was held in connection with that bust.

Former GECOM IT Manager admits to removing server during bomb threat at Command Centre

Former GECOM IT Manager admits to removing server during bomb threat at Command Centre

Former Deputy Chief Elections Officer, Aneal Giddings, who served as the Guyana Elections Commission’s Information Technology Manager in 2020, admitted under cross-examination today that during the 2020 Elections, he removed a server from the Region Four Command Center in the Ashmin’s Building against the instructions of the then Deputy Chief Elections Officer, and with no authorization to do so.

Giddings returned to the witness stand for a second day as the 2020 Elections Case continued before Principal Magistrate Faith Mc Gusty following Monday’s resumption after a three month hiatus.

On Monday, the Court heard that on the 5th March, 2020, Giddings removed the Election Commission’s server from the Command Centre during the tabulation process after he was informed by Police Officer Edgar Thomas that there was a bomb threat.

Thomas reportedly instructed Giddings along with other persons present at the time to evacuate the building, but Giddings said before he proceeded to the muster point on High Street he secured the server in his vehicle.

As he was being cross-examined by Defense Attorney, Nigel Hughes today,  Giddings admitted that under the Representation of the People Act, he had no statutory responsibility for the server, explaining that then Chief Elections Officer Keith Lowenfield was responsible for the security of the election’s equipment including the server.

He said at no time did the then Chief Elections Officer or the Deputy Chief Elections Officer instructed or authorise him to remove the server from the building.

Asked by Hughes to point to provisions within his contract that authorized him to remove the server, the former IT Manager said he could not.

“Might I suggest none exists,” Hughes suggested but Giddings disagreed, although telling the Court that it was “unfortunate” that he could not point to any specific document.

Giddings told the Court that as he was removing the server, he informed the then Deputy Chief Elections Officer (DCEO), Roxanne Myers that he was securing the server offsite and from all indication, she was not in approval.

Pressed for answers, Giddings admitted further that he took it upon himself to disobey the instructions of the then DCEO.

Hughes suggested to Giddings that there was no provision within the Laws and Regulations governing the Elections Secretariat that allowed him to disobey the instructions of his superior, to which he responded in the affirmative. He explained that there was an imminent threat to the server although admitting that despite the threat, persons had remained in the building.

The former IT Manager told the Court that at the time he was the only person with access to the server.

“You had an opportunity when that server was in the car and you were alone to access the server,” Hughes questioned, with Giddings responding in the negative.

It was explained that in order to access the server, alternating current (AC) power was required in addition to a keyboard, a mouse, and a monitor. It was explained further that once there was a UPS the server could have been powered.

Hughes suggested, and Giddings agreed that it was possible for all those peripherals to be in his car long before he took the server there. However, he clarified that those items were not in his car at the time.

As Hughes suggested that Giddings stole the server, State Prosecutor Latchmie Rahamat objected, calling on the Court to inform Giddings that he has a right not to incriminate himself. Noting that the question was unfair, Rahamat said at no point did Giddings indicate that he had taken an item with the intention of permanently depriving the owner.

But Hughes did not stop there and suggested to the Court that Giddings stole the information from the server and replaced it with something else.

“What he stole was not the server, he stole the information that was on the server, that’s what he stole. He stole the information. He removed the information that was on the server and replaced it with something else, that is theft,” Hughes suggested to the Court.

He said nothing stopped Giddings from removing information from the server, and though Giddings agreed, he said he could not have placed information on the server without critical access and equipment.

Hughes also suggested to Giddings that he placed the server in his car, and then met with two other persons in the car park, before entering the car with them but the former IT Manager told the Court he could not recall.

Hughes is expected to present video evidence to the Court, when the case resumes tomorrow.

Nine persons including the former Chief Elections Officer, Keith Lowenfield; former Deputy Chief Elections Officer (DCEO) Roxane Myers and former Region 4 Returning Officer (RO) Clairmont Mingo are on trial for allegedly attempting to declare fraudulent results during the course of the 2020 elections.
