Team Mohamed’s Facebook page reactivated

0

Last Updated on Saturday, 26 September 2026, 1:07 by Writer

The Facebook page being used by the main opposition We Invest in Nationhood and Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed as its major tool of political communication has been reactivated.

Mr Mohamed had accused the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPPC) of deleting the page, which has more than 500,000 followers, after his phones were seized by police at the Leonora Police Station on September 3.

The Guyana Police Force and the government did not confirm or deny the allegations by WIN and Mr Mohamed.

Earlier this month, Mr Mohamed told Demerara Waves Online News that he was in contact with Meta in an effort to recover the page which was used as a major campaign tool before, during and after last year’s general and regional elections.

He also said police returned his phones and a computer that were seized by police as part of their probe into allegations that he and another man were responsible for the flying of a drone over the private residence of President Irfaan Ali at Leonora, West Coast Demerara.

The other man, a contracted videographer, was charged with several violations of the Civil Aviation Act and two drones were seized from him.

Mr Mohamed has been using the Team Mohamed’s Facebook page to level several grave allegations of corruption against President Irfaan Ali and a number of ministers.

They have all denied them.

The Team Mohamed’s Facebook page reactivation comes after the United States (U.S.) Ambassador to Guyana, Nicole Theriot, said the opposition leader’s concerns about the stalled Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) machinery were “valid” and his missives were gaining the attention of the diplomatic community.

“He’s the leader of the opposition and we take his concerns very seriously and we have, indeed, all received that correspondence, all of the diplomats that I know here in Guyana and we take it very seriously and his concerns are valid,” she had told reporters.

Mr Mohamed, along with his father, is sanctioned by the U.S. and wanted for trial before a Florida federal court for alleged financial crimes.

Hospitality, garments, ICT businesses must scale up – GMSA President – News Room Guyana

0

Businesses in Guyana’s hospitality, garments, ICT and other service-oriented sectors must continue investing in their capacity as the country’s economy expands, President of the Guyana Manufacturing and Services Association (GMSA), Rafeek Khan, said on Thursday.

Khan was speaking at the launch of GuyExpo 2026 and said it provides an opportunity for businesses outside of the traditional sectors to showcase their products and services and connect with potential investors, distributors and other strategic partners.

Rafeek Khan, President of the GMSA.

He pointed specifically to the opportunities available to businesses in hospitality, garments, agro-processing, ICT and other services.

“As our economy expands, GuyExpo serves as a critical catalyst building and bridging the gap between potential and market success…this is your time, now is your time to showcase what you have,” he said.

Khan said businesses in these emerging and non-traditional areas must use opportunities such as GuyExpo to demonstrate their capabilities and establish relationships that could allow them to expand beyond the local market.

“The extracted industries which incorporate forestry, fisheries, mining and oil and gas, this is an expo for you as well. Then you have the agro-processing sector, the garment industries, you have ICT and you have the hospitality businesses…this is your time to prove yourself as a patriotic Guyanese local business,” he said.

Khan said that continued investment in local productive capacity is important as Guyana seeks to build businesses capable of meeting growing demand. Khan also said that stronger, strategic partnerships could help small enterprises develop products and services for regional markets.

He described GuyExpo as a hub for connections, noting that the relationships formed at the event could help businesses collaborate, expand their operations and position themselves to take advantage of opportunities outside Guyana.

For sectors such as hospitality, garments and ICT, he said building that capacity will be increasingly important as the country’s economic growth creates new demand for locally produced goods and services.

Khan said the GMSA remains committed to working with the Government and private-sector stakeholders to ensure local businesses are equipped to grow and thrive.

Guyana supports push for Africa and Latin America and Caribbean having permanent presence on UN Security Council

President Irfaan Ai has made a case for Africa and Latin America and the Caribbean to have permanent representation on the United Nations (U.N) Security Council.

During his address at the UN General Assembly, the President said the Security Council needs restructuring to reflect the geopolitical realities of today.

“We need a Security Council that reflects the geopolitical realities of the twenty-first century, not the power structures of 1945; a Council that embraces the emerging multi-polarity of our world, including permanent representation from Africa, and Latin America and the Caribbean,” President Ali told the world leaders.

The U.N Security Council has only five permanent members – China, Russia, France, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The African countries have been leading the push for more representation.

President Ali said if the United Nations is to remain humanity’s best hope, it must not retreat from multi-lateralism.

He said the security of one nation cannot be at the insecurity of another, adding that in an inter dependent world, cooperation is a necessity.

President Ali said there can be no enduring prosperity, when inequality deepens.

“This eighty-first session of the General Assembly must recommit itself. But recommitment cannot mean merely repeating the language of yesterday. The world has changed, and multilateralism must change with it. We need a new and invigorated multilateralism—one equal to the turbulence of our age, sufficiently courageous to confront its trials, sufficiently imaginative to navigate its transformations, and sufficiently principled to defend the rule of international law. To make the United Nations fit for purpose we must make it more transparent, accountable and responsive,” President Ali submitted.

The President said the UN General Assembly must be strengthened to give greater weight to its deliberative and representative authority, adding that it must bring greater coherence to a system too often divided by institutional rivalries, bureaucratic silos and competing mandates.

‘A celebration of Guyanese ingenuity’ – Rodrigues as GuyExpo 2026 launched

0

Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce, Susan Rodrigues, on Thursday evening officially launched GuyExpo 2026 at the National Exhibition Centre, marking the start of preparations for the highly anticipated four-day business and trade exhibition.

This year’s theme is “Creating Tomorrow’s Opportunities Through Today’s Investments.”

During her remarks, Minister Rodrigues described GuyExpo as an important fixture on Guyana’s business calendar and a platform that celebrates the creativity, innovation and enterprise of Guyanese businesses.

“GuyExpo is a celebration of Guyanese ingenuity. It is a celebration of everything that is great and good and special about Guyanese, our culture, our innovation, and the pride that we have in what is our own,” the Minister said.

She noted that the theme speaks to the importance of making investments today that will create opportunities for businesses and people in the future. This includes investments in businesses, people, skills, technology, infrastructure and ideas.

Minister Rodrigues encouraged exhibitors to use GuyExpo 2026 not only to showcase their products and services, but also to build relationships with potential customers, partners, investors and suppliers, and to explore opportunities for growth and expansion.

The Minister also reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to supporting micro, small and medium-sized enterprises and creating an environment in which Guyanese businesses can grow, employ more people, produce more locally and become competitive in regional and international markets.

Also speaking at the launch were representatives of several of GuyExpo 2026’s corporate sponsors, including KSM Investments, the Guyana Manufacturers and Services Association (GMSA), Demerara Distillers Limited (DDL) and Ansa McAl. Their participation reflects the continued support of the private sector for GuyExpo and its role in creating opportunities for businesses to connect, promote their products and services and explore new markets.

A key feature of the launch was the unveiling of the official GuyExpo 2026 website, providing businesses, exhibitors, sponsors and the public with a central platform for information about the Expo.

Immediately following the official launch, registration officially opened for both exhibitors and sponsors, signalling the start of preparations for the November event.

Minister Rodrigues noted GuyExpo has an important role to play in bringing businesses and consumers together while creating opportunities for partnerships, innovation and growth.

GuyExpo 2026 will take place at the National Exhibition Centre from November 12–15, 2026.

U.S. Military Prepares for Potential Action Around Cuba

0
(CBS News)— The U.S. Army Reserve is examining whether it can provide the military’s Southern Command with police forces, medical personnel and other support units within the next four months, according to an internal Army message reviewed by CBS News.
Though the message makes no reference to Cuba, the request is for continued military planning aimed at Cuba, according to multiple U.S. officials who spoke to CBS News under condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to speak publicly.

There is no indication in the document that any units have received deployment orders. But the planning comes as the Trump administration puts intense economic pressure on Cuba and urges the island nation to make political reforms.

The message does not identify how many troops would be needed in the Southern Command’s region, which covers Central and South America, including the Caribbean. It also does not specify where the forces could be sent or what operation they would support.

The document reviewed by CBS News says Army Reserve headquarters is seeking feedback from subordinate commands on the possible availability of six types of formations that would fall under the authority of U.S. Southern Command. The units would “possibly [be] needed in 90-120 days,” according to the message, which directs commands to provide feedback to Army Reserve headquarters by Sept. 25.

Among the units is a combat sustainment support battalion that specializes in coordinating logistics such as transportation, maintenance, fuel and supply needs, along with an engineer battalion. The document also seeks an expeditionary sustainment command that would oversee logistics across a theater of operations.

The document generated last week also calls for a medical brigade to command and coordinate medical units, as well as a forward resuscitative and surgical detachment to provide emergency surgery and trauma care closer to U.S. forces. Finally, the document seeks a military police brigade — these units typically oversee military police forces responsible for security, detention and other law enforcement missions.

Contacted by CBS News, the Army Reserve did not respond before publication.

A spokesperson for U.S. Southern Command said: “Due to operational security concerns, we do not disclose details or comment on U.S. operational movements or potential deployment timelines associated with current or future operations, contingencies, or planning. However, U.S. Southern Command continuously coordinates with the Joint Force to assess a range of potential requirements across its [area of responsibility] in support of assigned missions.”

Earlier this year, American forces conducted reconnaissance operations on the seafloor and maritime approaches surrounding the Cuban island, multiple U.S. military personnel told CBS News. Separately, U.S. airpower components were placed on heightened readiness and directed to pre-stage personnel for potential deployment. Those plans, however, did not come to fruition. CBS News is withholding certain details from publication that could potentially put U.S. service members at risk.

CBS News reported in May that U.S. intelligence officials were assessing how Cuba would respond to possible U.S. military action, as the Trump administration accused Havana of strengthening ties with Russia, China and Iran. The intelligence community’s 2026 annual threat assessment largely portrays Cuba as an enabling environment for larger geopolitical competitors, rather than as an independent strategic threat.

In July, CBS News reported that American military planners had examined a range of options for possible action against the island, including an Army-led air assault involving thousands of U.S. soldiers to be carried out by the 101st Airborne Division, the only unit trained for such a task.

U.S. officials who spoke to CBS News stressed in July that the briefings were not an indication that the president or the Pentagon had decided to go forward with an operation.

Since reentering office, President Trump has asserted a more muscular U.S. role in the Western Hemisphere under what officials have dubbed the “Donroe Doctrine,” a Trump-era corollary to the Monroe Doctrine focused on limiting foreign adversaries and other perceived threats in the region.

In April, American and Ecuadorian troops launched a joint mission aimed at dismantling a suspected criminal hub operated by a narco-terrorist organization. On Thursday, U.S. troops and agents with the Drug Enforcement Administration assisted Ecuadorian authorities in arresting more than 30 members affiliated with Mexico’s Jalisco New Generation Cartel.

Since September, the U.S. military has killed more than 230 people in 70 strikes in the Caribbean Sea and eastern Pacific Ocean. The operations are a stark contrast from the U.S. military’s historical role of maritime drug interdiction and arrest. Some legal experts have said the strikes amount to illegal extrajudicial killings because U.S. forces are prohibited from intentionally targeting civilians or individuals suspected of criminal activity, unless they meet the legal standard governing the use of military force.

For Cuba, the Trump administration imposed sanctions on Cuban entities and officials, including military research and development enterprises tied to the country’s nickel industry ahead of the U.N. General Assembly this week.

In New York, Mr. Trump told the U.N. General Assembly that his administration was seeking a “fundamental change” on the island and predicted Cuba’s communist government “will fall” and declared that “freedom will be coming to Cuba.” The Cuban delegation walked out during his remarks.

Mr. Trump also said Secretary of State Marco Rubio was “deep into negotiations” with Havana and vowed that the United States would not allow foreign adversaries to establish a strengthening foothold “on our own doorstep.”

Those remarks follow months of increasingly explicit statements from Mr. Trump about Cuba. Meanwhile, Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel has vowed to counter any U.S. attack, and has accused the U.S. of “aggression” and “economic warfare” by blocking oil imports to Cuba.

Earlier this year, Mr. Trump told reporters in the Oval Office that he believed he would have “the honor of taking Cuba.”

“Taking Cuba in some form, yeah,” he said in mid-March. “Taking Cuba. I mean, whether I free it, take it — I think I could do anything I want with it, if you want to know the truth.”

Later that month, Mr. Trump said bluntly: “Cuba’s going to be next.”

TV networks resume covering White House as legal battle continues

WASHINGTON, (Reuters) – US television networks resumed their coverage of President Donald Trump’s White House events today, amid an ongoing court fight over the administration’s decision to block CNN, MS NOW and Politico from the presidential grounds.

The ‌White House television press pool today aired video of Chinese President Xi Jinping’s arrival at the White House for tea as well as the two leaders’ tour of the National Archives, which houses the US Constitution.

The other networks’ refusal to set up cameras in solidarity had meant there was no pool coverage of Xi’s visit to Washington until today.

Trump has long used the press as a platform and punching bag, and since returning to office his administration has taken an aggressive stance against major news outlets, including limiting access to the Oval Office for some.

Trump declined to answer questions from reporters on China and Iran, his media ban and a controversial new government television ad as Xi arrived at the White House today.

“We appreciate the fair coverage. It’s been very fair. We appreciate it,” Trump later told reporters alongside Xi.

The White House did not respond to a request for comment.

UNPRECEDENTED CAMPAIGN

Trump had banned the three news outlets from the White House complex over coverage he asserted was false or negative. Their access was reinstated on Thursday after a federal judge deemed the ban likely unconstitutional and ordered their access to be immediately restored.

CNN, MS NOW and Politico sued Trump and other members of his administration, saying the ban violated the US Constitution’s First Amendment protections for free speech and a free press, as well as their due process rights.

A coalition of press freedom groups and ‌dozens of news organizations, including Reuters, later filed a legal brief supporting the three news outlets and highlighting press access’ central role to democracy.

Trump’s campaign against the media has been unprecedented. Upending decades of tradition, his White House has denied basic access to many major news organizations, launched personal attacks on journalists and filed multiple lawsuits against news organizations.

On Thursday, Trump made a joke to photographers in the Oval Office about the Chinese having the friendliest press corps, as he welcomed Xi to the White House.

Trump and his fellow Republicans, who are seeking to maintain their narrow majorities in Congress, have decried communism on the campaign trail before the midterms and have falsely accused Democrats of embracing communist ideology.

Xi became head of the Chinese Communist Party in 2012.

While the White House on Thursday told the court it had reinstated CNN, MS NOW and Politico’s access, CNN and MS NOW later said some of their journalists were denied access to cover Xi’s arrival for the White House state dinner, according to the Washington Post.

A lawyer for the three outlets in court this week warned that the White House could again try to revoke the outlets’ White House access as the current litigation continues.

David Ellison, CEO of Paramount Skydance (PSKY.O), opens new tab which is seeking to merge with CNN-parent Warner Bros Discovery (WBD.O), opens new tab, attended the Trump-Xi state dinner Thursday night.

Critics have raised concerns about Paramount-owned CBS News tailoring coverage to favor Trump although Ellison has promised to create an editorial independence board for both CBS and CNN as part of the deal.

GuyExpo 2026 to further encourage and embrace business to business engagement

GuyExpo 2026 to further encourage and embrace business to business engagement

Guyana’s premier trade and exhibition show, GuyExpo is set to take place from November 12-15 at National Exhibition Centre under the theme, “Creating Tomorrow’s Opportunities Through Today’s Investments.”

It will bring together industry leaders and businesses, as they highlight their products and services along with the country’s economic growth and potential.

Speaking at the launch of GuyExpo 2026 last evening, Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce, Susan Rodrigues, said GuyExpo has been a platform for Guyana’s vast economic potential to be showcased, and has been a meeting place for manufacturers, agro- processors, service providers, consumers and investors.

She said this year, the focus will continue to be on business-to-business engagement and expansion of small and medium sized businesses.

“Last year we placed greater emphasis on business-to-business engagement and remains an important part of this expo. We want business to use this platform to meet potential customers, partners, investors and suppliers and to explore opportunities that can take them into new markets.  We are seeing the impact of investments across Guyana including in Tourism. In 2025, we welcomed a record 453, 489 visitors and that momentum has continued this year,” the Minister said.

Rodrigues said beyond GuyExpo, her Ministry will continue to focus on working with small businesses to expand their footprint.

“As a Ministry, we will continue working to strengthen the environment in which businesses operate and grow, through our agencies and programmes, we are supporting entrepreneurs with training, business development, standards, market access and other forms of assistance. Our objective is to see more Guyanese businesses growing, employing more people, producing more locally and becoming competitive in the regional and international markets,” the Minister said.

It was explained that this year’s event will provide exhibitors with opportunities to forge connections, identify new customers, develop partnerships and explore avenues for growth.

“Guyanese business must be ready to respond to these changes and to take advantage of the opportunities that are emerging, that is why I encourage our exhibitors to make the most of GuyExpo 2026. Come to make connections, find new customers, identify new partners and explore what your business has become,” the Minister urged.

Minister Rodrigues noted  that while GuyExpo is facilitated by the Government, its true strength lies in Private Sector participation, especially exhibitors, manufacturers, agro-processors, service providers and sponsors.

WIN Takes Aim at Ali’s UN Message With New York Protests

0

President Irfaan Ali’s call before the United Nations for a world where “law restrains power” and where prosperity does not deepen inequality was met with a pointed challenge from We Invest in Nationhood (WIN), whose New York chapter took its protest directly to the streets of Manhattan and Queens on Thursday.

WIN members and supporters protested outside the United Nations in Manhattan on September 24 as Ali attended the 81st UN General Assembly. Later that evening, protesters confronted the President again during his visit to Jericho Place Banquet Hall in Queens, turning his international message into a domestic accountability test.

The protests centred on a question running through WIN’s statement: do the principles Ali champions on the world stage apply equally to Guyanese at home?

Ali told the UN that “there can be no enduring prosperity where inequality deepens” and called for a world “where law restrains power.” He also declared:

“Development must not merely make our economies richer; it must make our societies better.”

WIN seized on those words, arguing that they should not stop at the doors of the United Nations.

“Those principles must apply in Guyana too.”

The party said its protests were intended to demand answers on what it identified as seven areas of concern: political persecution, poverty and the cost of living, democracy and human rights, judicial independence, political interference in policing, corruption and accountability, and the MV Barima tragedy.

Political rights and institutional independence

WIN accused the Government of escalating political persecution against Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed, Opposition MPs, staff, supporters and people associated with them.

“No Guyanese should lose a job, licence, livelihood or rights because of political association.”

The party also demanded protection of the rights to “speak, dissent, organise, associate and participate politically,” while insisting that judges and magistrates must be able to perform their duties without “threats, intimidation, retaliation or political pressure.”

It further called for the Guyana Police Force to perform its lawful duties “professionally and independently.”

The demands come amid continuing political tensions surrounding Mohamed and other Opposition figures, including the September 3 police interception of vehicles near President Ali’s private residence following reported concerns about unauthorised drone activity. Mohamed was detained and later released, while the police investigation continued.

Wealth versus lived reality

WIN also challenged the Government’s presentation of Guyana’s economic transformation, citing an Inter-American Development Bank figure that 58 per cent of Guyanese live in poverty, 32 percent in abject poverty. Local analysts believe the figures to be much higher given poor data gathering techniques and fear of political reprisal.

The party argued that extraordinary economic growth must translate into “better lives and greater economic security for ordinary Guyanese.”

That challenge came as Ali used his UN address to promote Guyana’s development record, including health care, education, housing, infrastructure and financing for small and medium-sized enterprises.

“RAISE THE BOAT!”

The most emotionally charged demand concerned the MV Barima, which capsized and sank on July 18 with a major loss of life.

WIN’s message was blunt:

“RAISE THE BOAT! Recover the vessel, establish the full truth, preserve the evidence, hold those responsible accountable and properly compensate affected families.”

The Government has established an independent Commission of Inquiry with a mandate to establish the facts and sequence of events, determine the causes of the disaster, identify failures and recommend accountability and reforms.

Three men have also been charged with murder in connection with the disaster, according to the Director of Public Prosecutions.

WIN nevertheless says the families and the wider public are entitled to full answers.

“We demand accountability, equal treatment, independent institutions, judicial independence, respect for human rights, an end to political victimisation, and justice for the families of the MV Barima.”

The significance of Thursday’s demonstrations extended beyond the physical protests. WIN deliberately placed Ali’s own words back before him, arguing that the standards he invoked before the international community should be measurable in Guyana itself.

The party’s closing message was direct:

“The principles proclaimed before the world must also be upheld at home.”

Gender Equality Seal launched to promote safer, more inclusive workplaces – News Room Guyana

Gender Equality Seal launched to promote safer, more inclusive workplaces – News Room Guyana

A new Gender Equality in the Workplace Seal and Prevention of Sexual Exploitation, Abuse and Harassment Training programme were launched on Friday as part of efforts to strengthen workplace equality, safety and protection across Guyana’s public and private sectors.

The initiatives were launched by the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security and the Ministry of Public Service, Government Efficiency and Implementation.

The Gender Equality and Empowerment Seal will provide organisations with a structured framework to promote safe, inclusive and harassment-free workplaces.

The seal will require participating organisations to commit to gender equality and empowerment principles, complete four workplace training sessions and undergo a performance assessment and gender audit.

Organisations seeking accreditation must also sign a pledge making a public statement against gender and sexual discrimination, undergo an assessment of preparedness, complete mandatory training and go through review and accreditation. Those meeting the requirements will receive bronze, silver or gold certification.

Minister of Human Services and Social Security, Dr Vindhya Persaud

The PSEAH training forms part of the effort to equip organisations and their employees to better understand and prevent sexual exploitation, abuse and harassment in the workplace.

Dr Cona Husbands, Head of the Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Policy Unit, said the seal is intended to create a more just and equitable work environment, a cohesive and collaborative workplace and an environment free from sexual violence.

She said the initiative is also expected to support greater efficiency and staff performance, enhanced public image, improved employee competency and commitment, and reduced staff turnover.

Delivering the feature address, Minister of Human Services and Social Security, Dr Vindhya Persaud said the launch reflects the need for the country’s workplaces to adopt systems consistent with its development.

“Development, growth, improvement can only truly be realised if everyone is part of that effort and there is absolute ownership of what we want to achieve,” Persaud said.

She stressed that organisations must make changes early to develop “an efficient, accountable, effective, transparent model”.

“The seal cannot be achieved if it is not believed in,” she added.

Persaud also highlighted concerns surrounding sexual exploitation and harassment at workplaces, noting that people who make complaints may fear further victimisation or question whether action will be taken.

“These are the things we have to look at when we are trying to build systems that are gender neutral, equal and promote empowerment,” she said.

The launch therefore marks the introduction of a certification and training framework intended to help organisations examine their workplace practices, strengthen protections against discrimination and harassment and build environments where gender equality, safety and employee empowerment are incorporated into workplace culture.
