Press Statement: Ministry of Agriculture rejects misrepresentation of Abary Creek Drainage and Irrigation project

The Ministry of Agriculture categorically rejects the misleading assertions made by Opposition Leader Mohamed Azruddin regarding the Drainage and Irrigation (D&I) Project at Abary Creek.

The attempt to portray this transformational project as a threat to the livelihoods of rice and cattle farmers is not supported by the facts, the project’s feasibility assessment, or the Government’s longstanding commitment to expanding agricultural production and improving the livelihoods of farmers.

The Abary Creek project forms part of the Government’s broader programme to modernise Guyana’s D&I infrastructure and unlock new areas for agricultural production. The works include high-level embankments, internal drainage and collector canals, a high-level canal, bridges, culverts, and both high-level and regular sluices.

Far from undermining agriculture, the project is designed to expand productive capacity, strengthen climate resilience and improve water management. According to the project’s feasibility assessment, approximately 55,281.97 acres from Mahaica to Abary are expected to gain access to improved D&I infrastructure, benefiting rice and cattle farmers and supporting increased agricultural production.

The feasibility assessment further estimates a significant economic benefit from the project, including a net annual gain of more than G$1.595 billion in Region Five and more than G$3.85 billion across Regions Three and Six. It also identifies approximately 300 farmers in the Abary area who are expected to benefit directly.

These are not abstract figures. They represent real opportunities for farmers, increased productive capacity, improved resilience to flooding and water-management challenges, and stronger food security for Guyana.

The Ministry also wishes to make clear that the works are being undertaken as public works in accordance with the applicable legal framework. Consultations and negotiations with affected landowners and occupiers have been ongoing since April 2022, with the most recent engagement held on September 21, 2026. These consultations remain ongoing and will continue in accordance with the law.

It is therefore inaccurate to suggest that the Government is acting without regard for affected citizens or farmers. The Ministry has been engaging stakeholders while advancing a project that is intended to deliver long-term benefits to agricultural communities.

The Government’s record speaks for itself. Since taking office in 2020, significant investments have been made in drainage and irrigation, agricultural infrastructure, production, climate resilience and farmer support. Agriculture remains a central pillar of Guyana’s development strategy because it creates employment, supports rural communities, strengthens food security and contributes to national economic growth.

The Ministry of Agriculture will continue to pursue projects that expand agricultural opportunities and improve the conditions under which farmers operate. We will not allow misinformation or political misrepresentation to obscure the facts or undermine initiatives that are designed to benefit farmers and communities across Guyana.

MV BARIMA ACCUSED ASK COURT TO THROW BRAKES ON MURDER PROCEEDINGS – HGPTV – Guyana’s Nightly News and Entertainment Channel

0

HGP Nightly News – Two men charged with murder over the deadly MV Barima tragedy are asking the court to bring the criminal proceedings to a halt, arguing that the State bypassed mandatory procedures before laying the charges.

Attorneys representing Captain Kevin Price and Goods Superintendent Delon Granderson filed written submissions before Magistrate Ravindra Mohabir at the Charity Magistrate’s Court, seeking a stay of proceedings on the ground of abuse of process.

Their defence, led by Dr. Dexter Todd, is challenging the route taken by the State following the July 18 sinking of the MV Barima.

Todd argues that mandatory specialised marine-casualty procedures under Part XVIII of the Guyana Shipping Act, Cap. 49:01, should have been followed before murder charges were instituted.

The disaster left 73 people confirmed dead, approximately 30 missing and 76 survivors.

The defence is now asking the court to stay the criminal proceedings based on its argument that those procedures were bypassed.

Prosecutor Mandel Moore has been given until October 12 to respond.

Magistrate Mohabir is expected to hand down his ruling on October 19.

Meanwhile, Price, Granderson and Chief Mate Rondell Dwayne Roberts have been further remanded to prison.

Paper committal proceedings remain scheduled for November 16.

GCAA issues warning over presence of animals near runways and aerodromes

GCAA issues warning over presence of animals near runways and aerodromes

The Guyana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) is warning owners of animals against allowing their animals to enter aerodromes, saying the increasing number of animals crossing runways is posing a serious threat to aviation safety.

The warning from the GCAA comes weeks after a Trans Guyana aircraft slid off the runway of the Mabaruma Airstrip. It was later explained that an animal was on the runway at the time of landing.

In a statement, the GCAA said it is “alarmed” by the frequency with which animals have been crossing aerodrome runways across the country.

The Authority said the deliberate or negligent release of animals onto runways can obstruct aviation operations and place passengers, flight crews and aircraft at risk.

The GCAA noted that such incidents constitute offences under the Civil Aviation Act 2018 and warned that persons found responsible could face prosecution and significant penalties.

The Authority pointed specifically to Section 83(1) of the Act, which states that a person who trespasses on land forming part of an aerodrome, or causes an animal to trespass on such land, commits an offence.

“Anyone found responsible for compromising aviation safety will be prosecuted to the fullest extent and subjected to severe legal penalties. The safety and security of the aviation sector remain paramount, and the GCAA, in partnership with law enforcement, will ensure rigorous enforcement and decisive action against offenders,” the GCAA stated.

According to the provision, a person convicted summarily is liable to a fine of $1 million and six months’ imprisonment.

The GCAA said it will work with law enforcement agencies to ensure the law is enforced against persons whose actions compromise aviation safety. It reiterated that the safety of the travelling public remains its highest priority.

Two Brazilians die in “wrong lane” collision on Mabura road

Two Brazilian nationals died tragically on Saturday night when their vehicle slammed head-on into a mini-bus along the Mabura highway in the vicinity of Mabarua Hill.

The Brazilians have been identified as 54-year-old Ronaldo Scalon and 50-year-old Rogerio Tolotti. According to reports, Scalon was the driver of a Brazilian registered Toyota Hilux 4×4 pick-up and may not have realised that he was in the wrong lane driving along the roadway.

He reportedly lost control of the vehicle after driving around a turn on the roadway and slammed directly into a mini-bus that was heading in the opposite direction. The driver of the mini-bus, 40-year-old Delon Greaves has sustained multiple injuries.

According to reports, the Brazilian registered 4×4 pick-up was proceeding east along the northern side of the Mabura highway when the driver reportedly lost control and ended up in the southern lane of the highway, slamming into the bus.

The two Brazilians who died were pronounced dead at the Linden Hospital, while the injured bus driver was initially taken to the Linden Hospital but later transferred to the Georgetown Hospital.

The situation has raised new concern on the use of the highway, which is still under construction and which serves as a vital link between Brazil and Guyana. There have been calls for more awareness to be provided to drivers, especially those from Brazil who are accustom to driving on the right side of the road, while in Guyana, they will have to drive on the left side.

Kohli, Gill hit tons as India beat West Indies in opening ODI – News Room Guyana

    0

West Indies started and finished well with the bat, but what transpired in the middle went a long way in defining the direction of the opening ODI of the three-match series against India in Thiruvananthapuram.

John Campbell and Justin Greaves flew off the blocks, with the latter scoring a brisk century, while Amir Jangoo, fresh off a CPL final fifty, maximised the death overs with an unbeaten 58 off 43. But the fired-up West Indies ran into some Kuldeep Yadav wizardry in the middle and came away dazed.

A potential 330-plus total ended at 295-7 – which too was only possible due to Jangoo’s urgency in the death overs. Expectedly, West Indies’ total wasn’t enough: Shubman Gill scored his 10th ODI ton, extending his incredible purple patch at home since 2024 and Virat Kohli got to 15,000 ODI runs on the way to his 55th century in the format, that came off just 74 balls.

But first about Kuldeep, who was at his skillful best. He began after the drinks break when West Indies were soaring away at 107/0 in 15 overs and clipped the openers’ wings in his third over.

Kuldeep got Campbell to top-edge a tossed up ball to Prasidh Krishna at short fine, breaking a 135-run stand. The wicket brought Kaecy Carty to the middle, who just couldn’t get going.

He eventually fell in the 31st over for a laborious 13 off 31 as West Indies’ scoring rate dipped below six-an-over. Kuldeep returned after a successful first spell to up the ante further, sending back Shai Hope first with a flighted ball that the skipper miscued and then bowling a double-wicket maiden over.

Kuldeep first saw the back of centurion Greaves by trapping him leg before and then bowled a peach to Jewel Andrew which he nicked to Rohit Sharma at first slip.

Jangoo picked up the pieces of this meandering essay and turbo boosted it towards a fighting finish. West Indies managed 82 in the last 10 overs, with Jangoo hitting 50 of those from just 27 balls. Jangoo went after Prasidh and Gurnoor at the death to push West Indies as close to 300 as was possible. Their bowlers however lacked the bite to make that total seem competitive.

The new-ball bowlers copped a beating in the first Powerplay and were undone by a dropped catch that gave Gill an early reprieve. Rohit and Gill took 70 runs in the Powerplay to put India ahead in chase, but Alzarri Joseph had the former caught at deep square leg for a 35-ball 32.

Kohli arrived to the crease with the idea of taking on pace, swivel-pulling a 144kmph Joseph delivery for a six. As West Indies struggled to challenge the batters, Kohli and Gill cantered their way to a fifty each. But the bigger milestone of the evening came a little later in the 29th over, when Kohli went past 15,000 ODI runs.

The Kohli-Gill juggernaut rattled on at full speed as West Indies’ search for potency with the ball came up empty. Gill played with incredible control, playing just one false shot at the time of reaching his 10th ODI hundred – off 96 balls.

Roston Chase still managed to dismiss Gill against the run of play but Kohli marched on, scoring a staggering 30th century in an ODI chase. Kohli finished with an unbeaten 139 off 88, accompanying 10 fours with nine sixes – the most by him in an ODI innings. He wrapped up India’s chase in just the 42nd over with the last two of his nine sixes. (Cricbuzz)

8,000 truck speed limiters procured – Traffic Chief  – News Room Guyana

    0

The government has procured and delivered approximately 8,000 speed limiters for trucks as part of ongoing measures to curb speeding and improve road safety across Guyana.

The Traffic Chief, Mahindra Singh, made the announcement during a recent interview on the Starting Point podcast, where he noted that the devices are already in the possession of the Guyana Police Force while training is underway for personnel who will be responsible for their installation.

“The auto control devices, speed limiters, they were already procured and delivered to us. It is in our possession,” Singh said.

Singh explained that the actual installation training is expected to begin shortly, following certification of personnels on the installation of the devices, on goods transportation vehicles.

“The actual installation training will commence in about a week’s time and when that is concluded those certified trainers will install those devices,” the Traffic Chief said.

Singh noted that while the installation process itself is not lengthy, emphasis is being placed on ensuring that personnel are properly and competently trained to install the devices.

Moreover, he explained that the speed limiters are designed to prevent trucks from exceeding a prescribed speed by controlling the vehicle’s throttle and accelerator.

“If the set speed is 80 kilometres, that’s the maximum speed at which the lorry will travel when laden with weight. That is allowed by law,” Singh said.

The Traffic Chief said the regulatory framework will also provide for the proper maintenance of the devices and penalties where they are tampered with.

He further explained that once installed, each device will have to be certified as properly installed and functioning before the vehicle receives its certificate of fitness.

“There will be two levels of certification. One when installed there is a speed compliance certificate that has to be issued to certify that it’s competently installed and functioning before you get that certificate of fitness,” Singh said.

Singh also expressed support for eventually extending the use of speed-control technology to public transportation, noting that public transportation is an important part of road safety.

“Public transportation is not excluded from the equation of road safety,” he said, adding that the technology would “build in safety into the system.” (Republished from DPI)

14 new wells planned to meet growing water demand in Reg. 3 – News Room Guyana

    0

Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) is set to drill 14 new wells in Region Three (Essequibo Islands – West Demerara) to provide water for expanding communities there.

GWI Chief Executive Officer Shaik Baksh made the announcement during the opening of the utility’s water refilling station at Vergenoegen on Sunday. According to Baksh, the wells will target new housing areas developed by the Central Housing and Planning Authority (CH&PA).

“For the new housing areas at Meten-Meer-Zorg, De Kinderen, Leonora, Stewartville and in other parts of the country on the East Coast corridor, we have nearly 80 new housing developments and we have to get water… we will be drilling, on behalf CH&PA, 14 new wells targeting those areas,” Baksh said.

Baksh said GWI is hoping to begin drilling as early as October or November and said the contractor procurement process is underway.

The new wells will be drilled to support the existing system which cannot extend to adequately serve some of the new developments. He said as the region expands, so too has the demand.

As GWI’s reach in the region continues to grow, it has opened the refilling station, providing purified five-gallon containers for as low as $100. Other stations have already been opened in Region Two, Region Six and Pouderoyen in Region 3. Additional stations will be opened at Bartica, Region Seven and Linden, Region Ten.

Importantly, Baksh said GWI is providing 85 per cent treated water in the region and acknowledged that some areas are still affected. He assured residents that GWI is working to meet the 100 per cent target and disclosed that a new well is currently being drilled at Vergenoegen and another 10 are being drilled at hinterland communities as GWI seeks to strengthen water supplies amid concerns over dry conditions.

The planned well development forms part of broader investments to expand Region Three’s water infrastructure.

GWI is also planning a major surface-water treatment plant at the back of Stewartville. It will draw water from the Boerasirie Conservancy and supply communities along the West Coast corridor. Baksh said construction of that facility is expected to take about two years.

The developments come as GWI seeks to respond to the growing demand for water created by new housing developments across the country.

Akash Singh pleads guilty to manslaughter in Henry Boys’ case  – News Room Guyana

    0

Akash ‘Money’ Singh, 26, appeared calm in court on Monday as he pleaded not guilty to the murders of brothers Joel and Isaiah Henry, but guilty to two counts of manslaughter.

Singh, of Zeeburg, East Bank Essequibo, appeared before Justice Gino Persaud, where the State formally presented the facts surrounding the deaths of the two teenagers.

The prosecution said Joel Henry, 18, and Isaiah Henry, 16, both of Number Three Village, West Coast Berbice, left home on September 5, 2020, and went to the Number Three Village backdam. They did not return, and their bodies were later discovered in the area.

According to State Prosecutor Marisa Edwards, Singh was at a marijuana camp in the Cotton Tree Backdam with co-offenders Vinod Gopaul and Anil Sanichara when he was awakened by people talking.

Singh allegedly observed Gopaul and Sanichara with two boys of African descent, who were later identified as Joel and Isaiah.

From left: Isaiah Henry and Joel Henry

The court heard that one of the co-offenders said the marijuana farm had been sprayed down, after which the two teenagers began laughing. When one attempted to stand, he was allegedly chopped in the neck and other parts of his body, while the other was chopped when he attempted to run.

The prosecution said Singh was then threatened by his co-offenders and told that he would suffer the same fate if he did not assist them.

Singh allegedly took a cutlass and chopped one of the teenagers to the head before marking an X on the head of one of the victims at the instruction of a co-offender.

The court further heard that after the victims stopped moving, Singh assisted his co-offenders in tying their bodies onto horses. The men subsequently left the camp with the bodies.

Edwards said that, on the instructions of his co-offenders, Singh later burned the camp and disposed of the cutlasses and clothing in a koker.
Post-mortem examinations determined that both teenagers died from haemorrhage and shock due to multiple incised wounds, the court heard.

Singh was subsequently arrested and gave an audio-video interview under caution in which he detailed his alleged involvement. He also took investigators to the scene and recounted what had occurred.

Singh was represented by attorney-at-law Horatio Edmondson.

After accepting Singh’s guilty pleas to the two manslaughter charges, Justice Persaud requested several reports and statements, including victim impact statements, aggravating factors, a probation report, a prison conduct report and a psychiatric report.

The judge adjourned the matter to November 25 for sentencing.
