…two arrested

(Kaieteur News) – A late-night family dispute on Monday has left a Friendship Village, Corentyne man dead following a chopping incident, with two persons now in police custody.

Dead is Chittesh Sukhai, called “Rohan” and “Marsho”, a 23-year-old labourer.

Police said Sukhai and a female relative were involved in an argument, after which several males reportedly arrived at the location armed with cutlasses. The incident occurred at around 11:40 p.m.

Based on initial findings, Sukhai was allegedly chopped several times about his body. He fled the scene, but collapsed in a nearby yard.

He was taken to the Port Mourant Public Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment. His body was subsequently taken to Ramoo’s Funeral Home, where it awaits a post-mortem examination.

Police recovered two cutlasses at the scene, which are suspected to have been used during the incident.

Two males were later arrested in connection with the incident. They are a 27-year-old man of Friendship Village and a 23-year-old man of Limlair Village, Corentyne, Berbice.

Sukhai’s mother told reporters on Tuesday that her son’s death was senseless and undeserving, adding that he never provoked anyone or engaged in conflict.

“I stand up and see them kill my son. I want justice for my son. My son don’t fight with nobody. The whole village and my son is friends. My son don’t trouble nobody.”

She recalled a previous incident last month involving her son and his aunt, during which the aunt allegedly slapped him outside a supermarket. Sukhai reportedly responded in kind, and his mother believes some family members may have continued to hold a grudge over the incident.

“I had to send him away and hide he at he friend house,” she said, explaining that she feared for his safety.

According to the family, threats had been made against Sukhai’s life for several weeks, and reports were made to the police.

On Monday night, Sukhai was reportedly at a neighbour’s house before making his way home.

“The neighbours tell him they are going to sleep. So I tell him ‘come, I gon’ wait for you’. He said he gon’ pass through the hole at the fence.”

His mother said that as she watched her son climb through the opening in their fence, she heard his aunt, who was at the house behind theirs, allegedly instructing several persons to attack him.

“She tell them, ‘Ayo kill ahm, me geh money, me gon’ tek out ayo’. When meh turn back and watch, I see four of them deh on my son a chop him up,” the grieving mother recalled.

Sukhai’s sister said his friends later contacted the family and informed them that he had been badly chopped and was taken to the hospital.

“He friends them call and say that he geh bad chop up, let us come at the hospital. We go at the hospital, we see him, and is like he couldn’t make it. He (got) chopped up very bad. Very bad they chop him up. If they din want, they could’ve bruk his hand or foot and leave him,” she said.

She joined her mother in calling for justice, while maintaining through tears that her brother did not deserve to die in such a manner.

Investigations into the incident are ongoing.

Two foreigners held over illegal mining along Siparuni Riverbank

(Kaieteur News) – Three miners, including two non-nationals, have been detained following the discovery of an alleged illegal mining operation along the Siparuni Riverbank.

The Ministry of Natural Resources said the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) Enforcement Team discovered machinery positioned on the riverbank, with a river dredge directed into the bank to extract minerals.

The operation resulted in damage to the riverbank, with the GGMC now assessing the extent of the environmental damage. The enforcement team seized the dredge and other equipment used in the operation, including a motor vehicle. The matter has since been handed over to the Guyana Police Force for further investigation.

The miner responsible for the operation will be required to account for the gold extracted from the area and bear the cost of rehabilitating the damaged site, the Ministry said. The Ministry reiterated that mining operators must comply with all required approvals and environmental safeguards, warning that those found conducting illegal operations will be held accountable and required to restore areas damaged by their activities.

WIN, AFC call for independent probe into sexual assault allegations against Karimbaksh

0

(Kaieteur News) – We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) Member of Parliament, Toshana Famey-Corlette has added her voice to the call for an independent probe into the allegations of sexual assault brought against Deputy Commissioner of Police, Fizal Karimbaksh.

Famey-Corlette in a statement post on her Facebook page on Tuesday stressed that the growing number of serious allegations and disciplinary concerns surrounding Karimbaksh can no longer be ignored.

“This is not about one allegation. It is about a pattern of complaints about the conduct of a senior officer who continues to hold one of the most powerful positions in the Guyana Police Force,” she said before naming several incidents in which the officer was accused of criminal misconduct.

WIN, AFC call for independent probe into sexual assault allegations against Karimbaksh

Deputy Commissioner of Police, Fizal Karimbaksh

The politician noted that in 2018, the Police Office of Professional Responsibility confirmed an investigation into allegations of police harassment involving Karimbaksh while he commanded ‘D’ Division.

She outlined in 2019, two female police recruits made sexual-harassment complaints against him and in 2021, Village Voice published allegations from retired Assistant Commissioner Clinton Conway. Conway said that while Karimbaksh was force training officer, eleven female trainees made sexual-harassment allegations against him.

She said “Now, in 2026, a serving female police inspector has come forward alleging repeated sexual assault, threats to kill her and an alleged firearm incident. She said the alleged incidents occurred in 2019, 2023 and 2024, and that she reported the matter to the Minister of Home Affairs on September 20, 2026.”

Famey-Corlette noted the Minister of Home Affairs Oneidge Walrond had already said that sexual-misconduct allegations involving senior officers and female ranks must be taken ‘very, very seriously’, and that accountability must apply regardless of rank or position.”

To this end, she called on the Home Affairs minister to act immediately.

She stressed that “Karimbaksh should be immediately removed from operational command while these matters are independently investigated.”

The MP pointed to other incidents where the senior cop has been fingered.

“In 2026, a video emerged showing Karimbaksh intervening in an anti-crime operation involving junior ranks. OPR investigated the incident, and the Commissioner of Police subsequently stated that body-camera footage showed the ranks on the ground had acted lawfully and according to procedure…”

“From complaints of harassment, to sexual-harassment allegations involving female recruits, to disciplinary proceedings, to the latest allegations of sexual assault, threats and abuse of authority, there are simply too many serious matters surrounding one senior officer to keep pretending that this is business as usual,” she added calling for his removal and investigation.

Meanwhile, the Alliance For Change (AFC), in a statement, called for Karimbaksh to be relieved of duties immediately and for a full, independent and impartial investigation into reports of criminal misconduct made against him.

The party noted that the allegations against the officer are serious and of criminal nature.

The AFC pointed that it is not the first time that the head of the Special Organised Crime Unit (SOCU) has found himself accused of being on the wrong side of the law. The party calls for an independent team of regional and international investigators to be comprised to dig into these allegations.

“Like the rest of Guyana, we have no confidence that any investigation by the police into one of its own would be impartial. Although it is unlikely, a decisive statement from the Minister of Home Affairs supporting the call for an independent investigation would be an indication that the minister has a zero-tolerance policy on rape and sexual assault.”

The AFC therefore called on independent NGOs, women’s organisations and all right- thinking Guyanese to join the call for Karimbaksh to be removed from duties and for an impartial investigation into the allegations made against him.

Walton calls for full probe into Karimbaksh’s sexual assault allegations

…says unanswered police abuse complaints raise questions over accountability

(Kaieteur News) – Forward Guyana Movement Member of Parliament, Amanza Walton is demanding a full and independent investigation into allegations of sexual assault and abuse of authority involving Deputy Commissioner of Police Fizal Karimbaksh, amid renewed scrutiny of earlier complaints against the senior police officer.

In a statement issued yesterday, Walton-Desir said a female police inspector has publicly alleged that Karimbaksh sexually assaulted her on two occasions and threatened to shoot her.

The allegations have not been tested in court and no finding of criminal liability has been made against Karimbaksh in relation to the latest claims.

Walton said the inspector told Minister of Home Affairs Oneidge Walrond about the allegations on September 20, giving the Minister direct knowledge of the matter.

Amanza Walton, MP, leader of the FGM

The MP is now calling for the allegations to be investigated “fully and without interference”, arguing that the process must follow the evidence and, where warranted, result in criminal charges.

The latest controversy comes against the backdrop of allegations dating back several years concerning Karimbaksh and female police trainees.

Walton said that in March 2020, then Assistant Commissioner Simon McBean submitted a report to the Police Service Commission concerning complaints by two female trainees at the Felix Austin Police College against Karimbaksh, who was then Deputy Force Training Officer.

According to Walton, the report found that nothing presented had disproved or discredited the allegations and that there was sufficient prima facie evidence to support a criminal charge of sexual harassment under the Prevention of Discrimination Act.

Previous reporting has also documented allegations against Karimbaksh. In 2021, then Police Service Commission member Clinton Conway publicly stated that an investigation by McBean had resulted in a recommendation for disciplinary action against Karimbaksh over complaints by female recruits. Conway also alleged that a separate investigation had involved 11 female trainees. Those claims were disputed and were not findings of a court.

Karimbaksh was subsequently appointed a Deputy Commissioner of Police. He was among senior police officials sworn into the rank in December 2024 and has served as head of the Special Organised Crime Unit (SOCU).

Walton also linked the latest allegations to a separate investigation ordered by the Ministry of Home Affairs earlier this year into alleged sexual exploitation, abuse of authority and misconduct at the Guyana Police Force Academy.

On January 20, the Ministry announced that the Criminal Investigation Department and the Office of Professional Responsibility had been instructed to conduct full investigations into the allegations. The Ministry said anyone found to have engaged in wrongdoing, regardless of rank or position, would be held accountable, while stressing the need for due process and investigations free from interference.

Walton said she subsequently raised the matter in the National Assembly during consideration of the 2026 Budget Estimates for the Ministry of Home Affairs on February 13.

According to the MP, after Minister Walrond assured her that she was certain the investigation had commenced, she sought to ask when it would be completed. Walton-Desir said Speaker of the National Assembly Manzoor Nadir disallowed the follow-up question.

She described the incident as part of a wider failure of institutions to provide accountability for allegations of sexual abuse within the Police Force.

“This is precisely how this conduct survives in Guyana,” Walton said, arguing that the allegations are being “shielded at every level”.

She said the latest allegations must not be treated differently because of the rank of the person involved.

“Every Guyanese has the right to go to work, earn a living and return home with their dignity intact,” Walton said, adding that no woman should have to choose between her safety and her job.

The MP stressed that the allegations against Karimbaksh must be treated as allegations until properly investigated.

“The investigation into Fizal Karimbaksh must go wherever the evidence leads,” she said. “If the evidence permits, he must be charged.”

The Ministry of Home Affairs had not, in the material reviewed for this report, publicly announced the outcome of the January investigation into the Police Academy allegations.

…still awaiting Toronto Stock Exchange acceptance for two other Guyana gold projects

(Kaieteur News) – As Canadian firm XAU Resources Inc. awaits acceptance from the TSX Venture Exchange (TSXV) for two transactions in relation to two gold projects in Guyana, the company is in the process of interpreting data acquired from the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) for its Noseno Gold Project in Region One (Barima-Waini).

In a corporate update this week, XAU disclosed that it moved to a new office in Georgetown, Guyana to support its exploration activities in the country.

At the Noseno Project, the company said it is processing and interpreting approximately 5,257 line-kilometres of airborne magnetic and radiometric survey data acquired from GGMC and it intends to use the results to identify and prioritise targets for a planned exploration programme.

The Noseno Property is located in northwestern Guyana, within one of the country’s most prospective greenstone belts, and comprises 37 licences covering 37,623 acres, (or 152 square kilometres).

Meanwhile, XAU is still awaiting acceptance from the TSXV for the transactions involving the Matthews Ridge Gold Project and the Quartzstone Gold Project.

In August, the company had announced that has entered into an option agreement with Russian company Consolidated Northwest Resources Incorporated (CNRI) to acquire 100% interest in the Matthews Ridge Gold Project. The Matthews Ridge Property comprises 15 medium-scale mining permits covering approximately over 15,000 acres (or 60.97 square kilometres) and is located approximately 3km south of the town of Matthews Ridge and located approximately 32 km north of the Noseno Project.

However, in its recent update XAU stated the option agreement remains subject to TSXV acceptance. Chief Executive Officer of XAU Gary Bay had disclosed that the Matthews Ridge project represents another step in XAU’s strategy to expand and strengthen its gold exploration land position in Guyana.

Moreover, the company is also awaiting TSXV acceptance and shareholder approval for its proposed acquisition of Barbados-incorporated QS Holdings Inc., the parent company of local company Qstone Inc., which controls the Quartzstone project.

The Quartzstone gold project covers 296 square kilometres of contiguous mining lands in Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni). Notably, while XAU is in the process of acquiring QS Holding, another Canadian company Fortuna Mining Corp. under an earn-ing agreement is advancing the Quartzstone Gold Project.  According to XAU, Fortuna is carrying out a 2026 work programme on the project valued at approximately US$5.6 million, including an initial 5,000-metre diamond drilling programme.

Liberty Metals eyes Guyana gold expansion

…proposes name change to El Dorado Goldfields

(Kaieteur News) – Australian mining company Liberty Metals is seeking to deepen its focus on Guyana’s gold sector, announcing plans to change its name to El Dorado Goldfields Ltd. just weeks after acquiring a majority interest in two major gold projects in Region Seven spanning over 44,000 acres.

On 12th August, Liberty announced that it had acquired a 90% interest in the Oko North and Oko South Gold Projects, a package of 40 granted medium-scale mining permits covering approximately 180 square kilometres (km²) or 44, 479 acres in Guyana’s Oko gold district, Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni) – an area where nine million ounces of gold have already been established by other foreign players.

In its half-year report, Liberty’s Chairman, Nicholas Katris, disclosed that the proposed name change is subject to shareholder approval at the company’s General Meeting in October. “The change reflects the Company’s focus on the Oko North and Oko South Projects in Guyana’s Oko gold district and our intention to continue growing a quality gold portfolio. Our Brazilian critical minerals projects remain with us and under active assessment,” he said.

Katris further noted that 2027 will be focused on turning geology into drill targets and drill targets into discovery. He continued, “With a district-scale position in Guyana, a strengthened Board, a funded balance sheet and a disciplined approach to capital, the Company has never been better placed…”

With its maiden exploration already underway, Katris said maiden fieldwork in identified basement shearing, quartz veining and hydrothermal alteration across priority areas. The programme also identified extensive artisanal workings and coarse visible gold, which the company said is interpreted to be sourced from hard-rock mineralisation within its tenure.

He said too that Liberty has commenced a systematic soil geochemical programme of approximately 5,000 samples. “Every piece of evidence so far points the same way. Our focus now is on converting that geology into maiden drill targets, and Oko into a discovery,” Katris added. The Oko North and Oko South properties are located approximately 60 kilometres apart.

Liberty’s entry was secured through an agreement with a private Guyanese vendor. Under the agreement, Liberty will have four years to exercise its option to acquire the 90% interest. The total consideration is approximately US$8 million, excluding a separate milestone payment. It was explained that the milestone payment would become payable upon completion of a bankable feasibility study for the project. Liberty Metals is now the second Australian firm to control a significant land package in the district. Altair Minerals in 2025 secured a 70% interest in the Greater Oko Gold Project, which spans 590 km² of contiguous mining lands in the area.

Besides Altair and Liberty, Canada-based G Mining Ventures Corp. (GMIN) also holds a major land package in the Oko district. Through its recent acquisition of fellow Canadian firm G2 Goldfields Inc., GMIN expanded its footprint in the Oko district to a contiguous land package of more than 362 km². Cd The combination brings together GMIN’s advanced Oko West Gold Project with G2’s Oko-Ghanie Gold Projects, with a combined Measured and Indicated Mineral Resource of 7.0 million ounces and an Inferred Mineral Resource of 2.3 million ounces.

VAMED seeks leave to appeal full court’s hospital site ruling

0

(Kaieteur News) – Lawyers representing the Vienna-based healthcare infrastructure company VAMED Engineering GmbH have filed for leave to move to the Court of Appeal in the matter where the full court lifted the orders secured by VAMED Engineering against government over the control of construction sites for two modern hospitals.

Last week, the full court lifted preservation orders against the State in a dispute involving Vienna-based VAMED Engineering GmbH over the construction of the Georgetown Paediatric and Maternal Hospital (GPMH) and the New Amsterdam Hospital Campus (NAHC).

According to court documents seen by this newspaper, the law firm of Hughes, Fields and Stoby has filed for leave to appeal the order of the full court which lifted the preservation orders made by Justice Renita Singh on August 6, 2026.

VAMED seeks leave to appeal full court’s hospital site ruling

The Guyana Paediatric and Maternal Hospital

The law firm also requested that a stay of execution of the full court’s order dated September 22, 2026, pending the hearing and determination of the appeal.

In the document, the appellants are contending that the full court erred in law in allowing the appeal against the preservation orders (Orders 4-8) made by the Justice Renita Singh, which were made pursuant to the court’s inherent jurisdiction and powers to preserve property and Section 30 of the Arbitration Act 2024.

They contended that inter alia the full court erred in holding (orally) that the trial judge, having refused conservatory orders, could not then make preservation orders directing the State to take certain acts of preservation and restraining it from doing certain acts.

“Those preservation orders were distinct in nature and purpose from the conservatory orders that were refused; they were protective measures to preserve property pending arbitration, not injunctions against the State.

The ruling clears the way for the Ministry of Health to take possession of the project sites, containers, and equipment and construction materials and proceed with the projects,” the document outlined.

Last Tuesday, Attorney General Anil Nandlall, SC, noted that the full court, Chief Justice Navindra Singh and Justice Zamilla Ally-Seepaul set aside five orders made by Justice Renita Singh on August 6, 2026. Justice Singh had ordered the Ministry of Health to preserve the GPMH and NAHC sites, as well as 52 containers and equipment at the GPMH site, and prohibited the ministry from opening or interfering with them.

VAMED was similarly ordered to preserve the containers and equipment, while its security personnel were permitted access to the GPMH site solely to secure the items.  The ministry was also ordered to preserve contractors’ documents, property, designs, plans and intellectual property. In its decision, the full court said the appeal concerned the validity of the five preservation orders made after the trial judge had refused VAMED’s applications for conservatory and restraining orders against the Ministry of Health.

In its findings, the full court had questioned whether, having refused the substantive interim relief sought by VAMED on both jurisdictional and discretionary grounds, the trial judge could nevertheless make substantially similar orders by characterising them as measures to preserve property.

“For the reasons which follow, we find that the preservation orders cannot stand. They are inconsistent with the learned trial judge’s findings. Their legal foundation was inadequately established and their substantive effect was not properly considered,” the full court stated.

The court held that Section 16 of the State Liability and Proceedings Act prohibits injunctions against the State in proceedings of this nature.

That prohibition, it said, could not be circumvented by describing orders regulating the State’s conduct as preservation orders or by relying on the civil procedure rules.

The full court also found that the orders lacked the necessary statutory foundation under the Arbitration Act 2024 and conflicted with the trial judge’s findings that there was no urgency and that damages would constitute an adequate remedy.

The high court’s refusal of VAMED’s applications for conservatory and restraining orders remained in place, as does its decision to refer the underlying contractual dispute to arbitration.

The full court also awarded the attorney general GY$500,000 in costs.

ExxonMobil celebrates pumping 1 billion barrels from Guyana

…amid growing calls from Guyanese for changes to the contract

(Kaieteur News) – Less than seven years after first oil, ExxonMobil and its Stabroek Block partners have produced the billionth barrel of crude from Guyana, marking another major milestone in the country’s rapidly expanding petroleum industry.

ExxonMobil said the milestone underscores the speed at which Guyana has emerged as a significant global energy producer since production began at the Liza field in December 2019. But while the company is celebrating the scale and pace of the achievement, the billion-barrel mark also comes as Guyanese continue to demand a change to the 2016 Production Sharing Agreement that exempts ExxonMobil from paying taxes, no ring-fencing provision, a 2% royalty among other lopsided terms.

ExxonMobil celebrates pumping 1 billion barrels from Guyana

ExxonMobil said the milestone underscores the speed at which Guyana has emerged as a significant global energy producer.

In a press statement Exxon said the journey from discovery to the billionth barrel has taken less than a decade. The company and its co-venturers made their first major discovery in the Stabroek Block just over a decade ago, while first oil followed in less than five years, one of the fastest deepwater development timelines in the industry. Production has since expanded from a single offshore development to four major projects, supported by the Liza Destiny, Liza Unity, Prosperity and ONE GUYANA floating production, storage and offloading vessels.

The developments have pushed installed production capacity beyond 900,000 barrels per day, transforming Guyana into one of the world’s fastest-growing oil-producing jurisdictions. The Uaru project is expected to come on stream by the end of 2026, while construction is underway on the sixth and seventh approved developments, Whiptail and Hammerhead. Whiptail is targeted for startup in 2027, with Hammerhead expected to begin production in 2029. Exxon estimates that the Stabroek Block contains just under 11 billion barrels of oil-equivalent resources, with plans for as many as eight offshore developments by 2030. The company said Guyana’s growing production is helping supply energy markets in the Americas, Europe and Asia.

The other side of the barrel

The billion-barrel milestone, however, comes against a backdrop of intense national debate over Guyana’s petroleum agreement with Exxon and its partners, particularly the distribution of revenues and the pace at which production is taking place. The original 2016 Production Sharing Agreement provides for a 2 per cent royalty and a 50-50 split of profit oil after allowable costs, while the contractor can recover up to 75 per cent of production in a given month for its cost bank.

As Exxon moves deeper into production, Guyana’s share of the proceeds has become a central issue in public discussions over the country’s oil wealth. The company has maintained that the Stabroek developments represent a major economic opportunity for Guyana and that its investments have helped establish an entirely new offshore industry. The Government has also pointed to rising oil revenues and increased public spending made possible by petroleum production.

At the same time, critics have questioned the terms under which the resource is being exploited, including cost recovery, the absence of ring-fencing across projects and the extent to which Guyana can maximise its take as additional developments are approved.

Local participation

In the area of local content, Exxon said thousands of Guyanese employees, contractors and suppliers have contributed to the development of the industry, with local workers and businesses now playing an increasingly important role in offshore operations and project development. The company also highlighted investments outside the oil fields, including workforce development, supplier development and a US$100 million initiative aimed at strengthening STEM education among Guyanese students. Exxon said the milestone reflects collaboration among the company, its co-venturers, the Government, local communities, workers and suppliers.

Dharry accepts Lorusso challenge, eyes IBO title defence in Guyana

0

By Rawle Toney

(Kaieteur News) – Six months after etching his name into Guyana’s boxing history, Elton Dharry is ready to embark on another chapter of his career, and he has already accepted a challenge from Italy’s Alessio Lorusso for his International Boxing Organisation (IBO) Super Bantamweight world title.

Dharry captured the vacant IBO Super Bantamweight crown on April 25 this year, producing a dominant performance against Tanzania’s Salim Kassim at the Pegasus Corporate Suites, now Atlantic Suites, to become the first Guyanese male boxer to fight for and win a world title on home soil.

Dharry accepts Lorusso challenge, eyes IBO title defence in Guyana

Elton Dharry, IBO Super Bantamweight world Champion.

Now, with his name firmly established among Guyana’s world champions, the 40-year-old Dharry is looking to defend the belt and continue building his legacy in the 122-pound division.

“I want to defend my title,” Dharry told Kaieteur News, adding that he hopes his first defence can take place in Guyana.

According to Dharry, he has accepted a challenge from 30-year-old Lorusso, who currently holds the IBO Inter-Continental Super Bantamweight title.

The IBO rankings list Lorusso as Dharry’s immediate contender, setting up a potential clash between the reigning world champion and the Italian challenger.

Lorusso has compiled a professional record of 33 wins, including 10 by knockout, five losses and two draws from 40 bouts.

However, while the two camps have begun discussions, Dharry said no date has yet been finalised.

For Dharry, the potential bout represents more than simply another title defence. With his career entering its latter stages, the veteran boxer is determined to use the time he has left to test himself against the best available opposition and further cement his standing in the division.

Dharry accepts Lorusso challenge, eyes IBO title defence in Guyana

Italy’s Alessio Lorusso has challenged Elton Dharry for his IBO World Title.

The Guyanese, who owns a professional record of 31 wins, six losses and one draw, said he has never subscribed to avoiding difficult opponents, a philosophy he intends to maintain as champion.

“I don’t believe in ducking a fighter, because I remember my days of even being in other fighter’s emails and DM’s asking for a fight, so for me, he wants to fight, and we work out the terms, and we make it happen. Hopefully I can make that fight happen in Guyana, soon,” a typically candid Dharry said.

Dharry’s journey to the IBO world title was built over years of persistence, including periods when opportunities at the highest level were difficult to secure.

Having finally achieved his long-held ambition of becoming a world champion, he is now focused on what comes next.

At 40, Dharry acknowledges that his time in the ring is limited, but rather than looking beyond boxing, he remains intent on making the most of his championship reign.

His immediate objective is a successful first defence. Beyond that, Dharry wants to establish himself among the leading fighters in the world at Super Bantamweight before eventually walking away from the sport.

Ambassador announces plan by US Companies to build 10,000 “affordable homes” in Guyana

Two United States companies are setting the foundation to build 10,000 “affordable homes” in Guyana, with financing through US Export-Import Bank (EXIM), US Ambassador Nicole Theriot has said.

During an appearance on the Guyana Energy Perspectives podcast, the Ambassador said the two companies have responded to a call by President Irfaan Ali to bring more US small and medium sized companies to Guyana.

“The US Export-Import Bank is going to be providing funding for affordable housing in Guyana for construction and we have two US companies, who are working together one from Louisiana—U. S frame factory and the other from Indiana Golden-Shields. Golden Shields has never operated outside of the United States before but it headed the call and it heard what the President was saying and they are going to be constructing together 10,000 homes here in Guyana,” the Ambassador noted.

The Ambassador said the move will benefit Guyanese and open up opportunities for more persons to own their own homes.

“They are going to be constructing homes not just for the elites but that the average Guyanese person can purchase and I think that is such a wonderful thing that the government is thinking about and providing financing for companies to come in and provide housing for everyone not just the rich,” the Ambassador stated.

It is unclear when the project will get underway.

The announcement by the Ambassador comes as the government also recently announced plans to build 40,000 houses as part of a wider housing push. The Ministry of Housing has a number of housing plans that it intends to roll out in the coming months.
