New Lake Capoey bridge improves access for residents, businesses

0

A newly constructed bridge at Lake Capoey, Region Two, is making travel easier for residents and visitors, while supporting businesses in the indigenous community.

Resident Melrose Henry said the bridge is improving daily life by helping children reach secondary school and making it easier to transport supplies and take sick residents to hospital.

“It’s not just a bridge for us, it means development for us, it means development for our people,” she said.

Henry said better access is particularly important for Lake Capoey’s tourism-based economy, allowing people to travel more easily into and out of the village.

She added that businesses are benefiting from the improved connection, which also makes it easier to bring groceries, building materials, and other products into the village.

“Businesses are thriving, people’s personal lives are being made better, and this is what we are grateful for as a people, as an indigenous community,” Henry described.

Beyond its practical benefits, the bridge has become a source of pride for residents.

Henry said, “We are forever thankful and grateful for this bridge.”

Guyana, Jamaica sign tourism cooperation agreement

Guyana and Jamaica have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to strengthen cooperation in tourism and hospitality, including investment, air connectivity, training and sustainable tourism development.

Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce Susan Rodrigues and Jamaica’s Tourism Minister Edmund Bartlett signed the agreement during the State of the Tourism Industry Conference (SOTIC) 2026 at the Atlantic Suites by Hyatt, according to a release issued yesterday.

The agreement provides a framework for sharing expertise, developing links between tourism stakeholders and encouraging travel between the two countries. It also covers cooperation in tourism resilience.

Rodrigues said the agreement would allow the countries to draw on each other’s experience and explore opportunities for collaboration.

“This partnership allows us to learn from each other’s experiences, build stronger connections between our tourism stakeholders and create opportunities that benefit our people and the wider Caribbean,” she stated.

Bartlett said cooperation with Guyana could support regional tourism integration and the development of multi-destination travel. He stressed that the industry’s success should extend beyond visitor arrival figures to the benefits retained by local economies.

“Guyana is adding much more to the Caribbean tourism experience, with its forests, hidden valleys and rich natural heritage. We want to build the capacity of our people to respond to the demands of prosperity and ensure that we retain greater value from tourism for our people,” Bartlett said.

The signing was witnessed by Permanent Secretary of Jamaica’s Ministry of Tourism Jennifer Griffith, Guyana Tourism Authority Director Kamrul Baksh, and Caribbean Tourism Organization Secretary-General and Chief Executive Officer Dona Regis-Prosper.

The release did not specify implementation timelines, funding commitments or particular projects to be pursued under the agreement.

Guyana reaffirms commitment to human rights, democratic governance

0

The government has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting human rights, strengthening democratic institutions and upholding the rule of law during the 153rd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in Arusha, Tanzania.

Minister within the Office of the Prime Minister with Responsibility for Public Affairs and Information, Kwame McCoy, delivered the statement on behalf of Guyana to the IPU’s Standing Committee on Human Rights and Democracy, held from October 5 to 9, 2026.

Minister McCoy, who serves as a member of the 18-person Bureau guiding the work of the committee as part of the Latin America and Caribbean Group, highlighted Guyana’s ongoing efforts to strengthen constitutional institutions, promote accountability and expand access to justice.

“For us, human rights and democracy are not abstract principles confined to international declarations. They are essential to the dignity of our people, the legitimacy of our institutions, and the sustainable development of our country,” the minister stated.

He pointed to Guyana’s participation in the Fourth Universal Periodic Review in 2025, during which the country supported 146 of the 206 recommendations received.

These commitments address democratic governance, gender equality, the protection of children and vulnerable groups, social inclusion and access to legal protection.

The minister also underscored the importance of institutions such as the Elections Commission, the judiciary, the Audit Office, the Ombudsman and the Rights Commissions in safeguarding citizens’ rights and ensuring transparency and accountability.

Parliament, he noted, remains central to democratic governance through its legislative, representative and oversight functions, providing a platform for public participation and scrutiny of executive actions.

Addressing electoral integrity, Minister Mc Coy said Guyana’s 2025 General and Regional Elections were conducted within the constitutional framework, while emphasising the need to continually strengthen the safeguards that underpin credible democratic processes.

He further highlighted the connection between human rights and national development, noting that access to education, healthcare, housing, employment, social protection and economic opportunity are essential to human dignity.

“Guyana remains committed to strengthening parliamentary institutions, expanding inclusive participation, and ensuring that parliamentary processes advance transparency, accountability, good governance and democratic values,” he noted.

The minister reaffirmed that protecting human rights and sustaining democracy require continuous reform, institution-building and meaningful engagement with citizens. [DPI]
