Grenadian PM returned to office in landslide
Dickon Mitchell, the prime minister of Grenada who has called for slavery reparations and an apology from Britain, secured a second term yesterday following general elections, according to the Associated Press.
Mitchell, of the National Democratic Congress, secured 14 of 15 seats, or more than 60% of the vote, beating Peter David, a former foreign affairs minister running with the Democratic People’s Movement, according to preliminary results from Grenada’s Parliamentary Elections Office.
Mitchell has pledged to modernize the island’s economy, strengthen healthcare services and lower youth unemployment.
Guyana’s President Irfaan Ali has congratulated Mitchell.
“I extend congratulations to Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell on his renewed mandate to lead Grenada.
“His re-election represents a vote of confidence in his leadership and a mandate of continuity for the policies and vision his government has been pursuing for Grenada.
“I look forward, during his new term, to expanding our close collaboration and working together to advance regional integration.
“On behalf of the Government and people of Guyana, I extend best wishes for a successful new term and for the continued peace, progress and prosperity of the people of Grenada.”
