President Irfaan Ali Thursday night congratulated Grenada’s Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell on his landslide election victory, with his National Democratic Congress (NDC) winning 14 of the tri-island nation’s parliamentary seats.

“His re-election represents a vote of confidence in his leadership and a mandate of continuity for the policies and vision his government has been pursuing for Grenada,” Dr Ali said in a statement on Facebook.

The NDC’s nearest rival, the Emmalin Pierre-led New National Party (NNP) won the lone remaining seat.

In congratulating Mr Mitchell on his “renewed mandate” to lead Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique, the President said he looked forward to expanding “our close collaboration and working together to advance regional integration.”

Grenada is pushing ahead with plans to invite international oil companies to explore for hydrocarbons offshore, based on accumulated data, officials had said well ahead of Thursday’s polls.

Meanwhile, Grenada’s Honorary Consul to Guyana Komal Singh congratulated Mr Mitchell on his “decisive victory”.

“This resounding mandate is a clear endorsement of the leadership, vision, and progressive development agenda of Prime Minister Mitchell and his Government,” Mr Singh said on behalf of the consulate.

He also commended Grenadians for their continued commitment to democracy, national development, and the strengthening of democratic institutions. “We look forward to deepening our bilateral relations and advancing our shared commitment to regional integration, economic growth, and prosperity for our peoples,” he also said.

Thursday’s margin of victory represents unassailable gains for the NDC over the NDP when compared to the 2022 polls.

Four years ago, the NDC had won nine seats and the NNP got six.
