President Ali sidesteps questions on Seeram’s future as Border Patrol Director

Oct 13, 2026 | 2 min read

(Kaieteur News) – President Irfaan Ali on Monday deflected questions from the press regarding the future role of National Border Patrol Director, Daniel Seeram following his recent guilty conviction for domestic assault, firmly dismissing queries about executive clemency and declining to state whether the official will be asked to step down.

The exchange unfolded on Monday, October 12, 2026, where reporters pressed the head-of-state on whether Seeram would retain his key national security position or if executive intervention was under consideration.

“Outside My Scope of Thinking”

Asked whether he would consider exercising his constitutional powers to grant Seeram executive clemency, President Ali distanced himself from the prospect.

“I am not even in that space as yet,” President Ali stated, emphasising his adherence to due process. “This is the president who has always acted in the confines of the law. I believe in that”.

When pressed further by reporters on whether a presidential pardon remained an option, Ali firmly rebuffed the premise, “You are even outside of my scope of thinking at the moment”.

However, when questioned directly on whether Seeram would be asked to resign as director of the National Border Patrol given his guilty verdict, the president declined to answer and walked away.

The president’s comments follow weeks of intense public interest surrounding Seeram’s legal troubles. On October 2, 2026, Senior Magistrate Abigail Gibbs at the Sparendaam Magistrates’ Court, found Seeram guilty of assault causing actual bodily harm to his ex-wife.

Following the verdict, Seeram, a former captain in the Guyana Defence Force and former Region Four chairman, was remanded into custody pending a formal sentencing hearing scheduled for November 2, 2026. Seeram was handed over to the Camp Street prison on Saturday night October 10.

For now, the administration has maintained official silence on whether Seeram’s contract will be terminated or suspended as he awaits his November sentencing date.
