The less yuh explain de better

Oct 3, 2026 | 2 min read

(Kaieteur News) – A woman was interviewing a man for a position in she firm. She look pon he résumé and notice a four-year gap.

“Sir,” she ask, “I notice you have a four-year gap in your résumé. What were you doing during that time?”

The man answer, “I was in Yale.”

“Wonderful!” the woman exclaimed. “You are hired!”

The man smile and say, “Thanks! I really need de job.”

That story remind dem boys of how people does explain gaps in dem résumé in Guyana.  Somebody apply fuh a senior position and de interviewer ask, “What were you doing between 2019 and 2023?”

He say, “I was pursuing personal development.”

Dem interviewer ask, “What kind of development?”

He say, “I was developing patience waiting fuh somebody call me back.”

Another man résumé say he has “extensive experience in strategic management.”

When dem ask him where he get the experience, he say, “I manage strategically to avoid doing anything until somebody else does it.”

Then you got the fellow who claim he is “proficient in Microsoft Office.”

Dem boys ask he what is Microsoft Excel.

He say, “Is when Microsoft does excel.”

But the funniest ones are the people who does put “team player” on dem résumé.

Dem boys know one fella who is such a team player that whenever the work start, he does immediately look around fuh see who else could do it.

And “excellent communication skills”?

That could mean anything.

Some people communication skills so good that they could spend 45 minutes talking and at the end nobody knows what they say.

Dem boys once see a résumé where the applicant describe himself as “highly motivated.”

When dem ask what motivates him, he say, “Salary.”

Dem boys seh, at least the man honest.

Because these days, getting a job is not always about what you know. Sometimes is about what the interviewer thinks you know.

So, if you ever get a four-year gap in your résumé, remember de man from the story.

Just tell dem:

“I was at Yale.”

But if dem ask which Yale, do not elaborate.

Sometimes, dem boys seh, the less you explain, the better your chances of getting through the interview.

Talk half. Leff half.
