Worker dies after forklift incident at Albion Estate – News Room Guyana

Oct 2, 2026 | 2 min read

A 23-year-old Supernumerary Constable died on Thursday, days after he was allegedly struck and pinned by a forklift while performing duties at the Albion Sugar Estate.

Dead is Latchman Raghoo of Lot 138 “H” and “J” Albion Front, Berbice.

Raghoo was reportedly injured on September 22 while he was checking sugar inside a bond at the estate.

His brother, Natanial Raghoo, told the News Room that on September 22, a forklift was loading sugar onto a truck when it was allegedly reversed and pinned Latchman against the bond.

Workers reportedly responded after being alerted, and Latchman was taken by ambulance to the estate’s medical facility. He was subsequently transferred to the Port Mourant Public Hospital, then the New Amsterdam Public Hospital, before being taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) for further treatment.

Natanial said his brother underwent surgeries to his hip and ankle, which were reportedly successful. However, several days later, Latchman developed breathing difficulties and was taken to the Intensive Care Unit at the GPHC.

According to his brother, doctors later informed the family that an injury to Latchman’s right foot was causing complications and that part of the foot would have to be amputated. The family consented to the procedure after being told there was an uncertain chance of his condition improving.

Natanial said that while Latchman was being taken back to the ICU, his heart stopped. Medical personnel performed CPR, and his heart resumed beating for a short period. He later died at about 3:59 hours on Thursday.

“It’s a life lost and you can’t put money on someone’s life. It’s a son, brother, father everybody loses. We just hoping that the investigation come out in the best way,” he revealed.

Natanial described his brother as a friendly person and said his death has left the family devastated. Latchman leaves behind his parents, brother, and other relatives and friends.

The Guyana Sugar Corporation Inc (GuySuco), in a Facebook post,  said that the Estate will ensure relevant internal processes are followed and that the circumstances surrounding the incident are fully reviewed.
