Nov 6, 2026 | 1 min read

Days after Gavin Douglas was reportedly beaten to death while in custody at the Vreed-en-Hoop Police Station, five police ranks were jointly slapped with a murder charge.

Tiansay Thomas, Wencill Marshall, Joel Newsum, Bevis Lyle, and Ariff Haniff were accused of beating Douglas to death on October 31. They appeared before Chief Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court and were not required to plead to the indictment.

Attorney-at-law Yuborn Allicock appeared on behalf of Thomas and Marshall, while Newsum was represented by a legal team comprising Kiswana Jefford, Nigel Hughes, and Tiffaine Rutherford. In addition, Haniff was represented by Shamar Britton and Meshawn Persaud.

The five men were remanded to prison until November 17 and matter was transferred to the Vreed-en-Hoop Magistrate’s Court.
