Daughter, reputed husband plead guilty to murdering Jenny Mohamed
Saffia Mohamed, called “Sasha”, and her reputed husband, Austin Ramchand, have pleaded guilty to murdering her mother, Jenny Mohamed, after planning the killing and purchasing supplies to dispose of her body.
The couple appeared before Justice Zamilla Ally-Seepaul at the High Court in Demerara, where they admitted to the June 10, 2025 murder at Non Pariel, East Coast Demerara. They will be sentenced at a later date.
Padma Dubraj and Rodley Mathoo appeared for the prosecution.
According to the facts presented by the prosecution, the couple had been residing at Jenny’s home. Before the killing, there had been disagreements between Saffia and her mother, who had demanded that the couple leave.
On June 8, 2025, Saffia and Ramchand devised a plan to kill her. The following day, they purchased jumbo-sized garbage bags, rope and gloves from Anand Supermarket at Buxton, East Coast Demerara.
They carried out the attack on June 10, after Jenny’s husband, Rasheed Mohamed, left the residence.
At about 11 a.m., Saffia strangled her mother with a rope and subsequently stabbed her multiple times with a kitchen knife, while Ramchand assisted by restraining and striking her.
Jenny eventually collapsed and became motionless. Saffia then used a mop to clean blood from the area and washed the knife.
The couple placed Jenny’s body into black garbage bags, wrapped it in a tarpaulin and transported it in motor car PAJ 1114 to the Eccles/New Road area, East Bank Demerara, where they disposed of it.
They also discarded several of Jenny’s belongings and the clothing they had worn during the attack.
Afterwards, Saffia accessed her mother’s Facebook account and posted a message purporting to be from her, creating the impression that she had left.
During an audio and video-recorded interview conducted by Detective Stephan Hinds, Saffia admitted that she and Ramchand had planned the killing and purchased the garbage bags, rope and gloves beforehand.
She described strangling and stabbing her mother while Ramchand restrained her, as well as cleaning the residence and disposing of the body and belongings.
Acting on information Saffia provided, police accompanied her to the Eccles/New Road area. She directed investigators along a dirt road and identified the location where her mother’s body had been discarded.
Ranks observed a yellow tarpaulin wrapped around a large black garbage bag containing a bulky object in a drainage canal. Upon removing the coverings, they discovered the remains of an adult woman with a rope around her neck.
Saffia subsequently directed police to another location along the southern bank of the New Eccles to Ogle Access Road, where her mother’s belongings had been discarded.
Among the items recovered were female clothing, black wedge-heeled shoes, glasses, a chair pillow, a brown handbag and old lottery tickets.
During a confrontation between the accused, Ramchand initially alleged that Jenny’s husband had strangled and stabbed her. Saffia rejected that account, stating that her father had not been at home and that she and Ramchand had killed her mother.
According to the prosecution’s account, Ramchand then accepted that Saffia was speaking the truth.
During a further audio and video-recorded interview at the residence, Saffia demonstrated what had occurred and pointed out the knife used in the killing and the mop used to clean blood from the floor. Both items were seized for forensic examination.
A post-mortem examination conducted by Dr. Singh revealed ten incised wounds, including injuries to Jenny’s neck, chest, shoulder and left arm. There was also a ligature mark around her neck, with haemorrhage beneath it, and evidence of compression injuries.
The cause of death was certified as haemorrhage and shock due to multiple incised wounds, compounded by compression injuries to the neck.
