Seeram walks free after 13-month suspended sentence for assaulting ex-wife

Nov 3, 2026 | 3 min read

Former Region Four Chairman and current National Coordinator of Guyana’s Border Patrol Unit, Daniel Seeram, will not have to serve prison time after Magistrate Abigail Gibbs on Monday suspended the remaining 13 months of his sentence for assaulting his former wife, Farzana Hamid.
Seeram’s sentenced started at 24 months’ imprisonment but the Magistrate deducted 10 months in recognition of his good character and record of service to the State, along with a further 31 days for the time he spent on remand. He was convicted on October 2, 2026.
Addressing the 13 months remaining, the Magistrate exercised her powers under Section 3(1) of the Criminal Law Reform Act to suspend the sentence. As such Seeram will not be required to serve the remaining prison term unless he commits another offence, which could result in the suspended sentence being activated.
During Monday’s proceedings, Hamid’s victim impact statement outlined the lasting effects of the abuse and the difficulties she continues to face even after leaving the marriage.
She told the court that while she eventually found the courage to leave the relationship and seek justice, the consequences of what she experienced had continued to affect her physical health, emotional wellbeing and ability to move forward.
“… I have continued to struggle with anxiety, fear and difficulty trusting others. These experiences and fear have affected my confidence, my sense of security and my ability to establish another relationship,” she said.
“Your Worship, I am not seeking revenge. I am asking that Daniel be held fully accountable for his actions,” Hamid said, adding that “all I want is justice, accountability and the opportunity to live my life without fear.”
Seeram expressed remorse over the incident and apologised to Hamid.
“I am sincerely sorry,” he added.
The charge stemmed from an incident on September 11, 2023, at the couple’s residence in Cummings Lodge, Greater Georgetown, where Seeram was accused of assaulting his then-wife with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
He initially pleaded not guilty and was granted $50,000 bail when he appeared at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court in October 2023.
According to reports published by Guyana Times at the time, the incident followed a disagreement between the couple which reportedly escalated into a physical confrontation. Seeram was also accused of brandishing a licensed firearm during the incident.
Hamid subsequently reported the matter at the Turkeyen Police Station, leading to Seeram’s arrest and charge. Reports at the time indicated that marks of violence were observed on her body.
When the matter was first reported, Seeram was serving as Region Four Chairman and was an executive member of the People’s National Congress Reform (PNC/R).
Before the 2023 incident, he had been charged with using threatening language against his father-in-law following an incident involving the two men and licensed firearms. He was granted $20,000 bail in that matter.
Reports at the time stated that both men had made separate reports to the Police, each alleging that the other had produced a firearm. Their firearms and ammunition were subsequently seized by Police.
