From Palestine to Sudan, President Ali calls for end to global conflicts – News Room Guyana
President Dr Irfaan Ali called for an end to violence and conflict around the world — using diplomacy, not guns — as he addressed the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly on Thursday.
Ali zeroed in on the situation in Gaza as he spoke about the need to end conflicts around the world.
“I reiterate Guyana’s call for a just and lasting solution to the crisis in the Middle East, one that brings an end to the suffering of innocent civilians and recognises the Palestinian people’s legitimate right to self-determination and to a secure homeland of their own. We reiterate our support for the two-state solution,” he said.
In short, the two-state solution is a proposed plan to resolve the long conflict between Israel and Palestine by creating two separate, independent countries, allowing Israel and Palestine to exist side by side as independent, sovereign states.
The President also called for an end to the Russia-Ukraine war and the war in Sudan, and for the “peaceful resolution of all conflicts that continue to consume lives, uproot families and extinguish the hopes of millions in other parts of our world.”
To end these conflicts, however, Ali said diplomacy is needed. He also said the United Nations has a key role to play, though he contended that some reforms are necessary.
“We have the possibility of silencing the guns through dialogue and diplomacy. The world does not need more sophisticated instruments of destruction; it needs a more sophisticated capacity for peace,” President Ali said.
The President also called for “viable solutions” for Cuba and Haiti.
For Cuba, he reiterated CARICOM’s offer to meaningfully help usher in peaceful, people-centred development. For Haiti, he noted that sustained support from the international community, through the provision of key financial and material resources, will be crucial.
