Guyana turning into a country of hard ears

Oct 10, 2026 | 2 min read

(Kaieteur News) – Dem boys beginning to believe dat Guyana need more ear doctors than traffic police. Because between de horns, de minibuses and de cars driving pon de road with music blasting, people hearing getting worse by de day.

Some drivers believe a car is not properly equipped unless it can shake windows, rattle zinc fences and make people teeth dance to de music. Dem got speakers powerful enough to wake up de dead, and bass loud enough to make a sleeping baby apply fuh migration.

Dem boys see one car passing de other day, music blasting so loud dat a man standing on de pavement nearly confess to a crime he never commit. De driver looking proud, as though he just win a national award for disturbing de peace.

And de funny thing is, dem drivers does behave as though everybody on de road buy a ticket to de concert. Nobody ask dem to provide entertainment, but dem insist on making de whole neighbourhood listen to every song, whether dem like it or not.

Imagine somebody trying to study, a baby trying to sleep, an old lady trying to hear de evening news, or a sick person trying to rest. Suddenly, here come Mr. Big Speaker, turning de public road into a nightclub without permission from anybody.

Then yuh got de horn blowers. Dem blow horn when dem see a pretty girl, when de light turn green, when de light turn red, and sometimes when dem see a pothole. Dem blow horn so much dat if a traffic light ever develop feelings, it would commit suicide.

De minibus drivers contributing too. Some play music so loud dat passengers have to read lips to know where dem going. By de time yuh reach yuh destination, yuh lose yuh hearing, yuh train of thought and sometimes yuh will to live.

Dem boys want know when blasting music in public become a national duty. Nobody should have to endure somebody else’s musical taste at a volume suitable for launching a spacecraft.

Noise pollution is not entertainment. It is inconsideration with a sound system.

If dem continue like dis, soon people gan need earplugs to walk pon de road and hearing aids to attend a wedding.

And de next time somebody ask yuh why yuh hard of hearing, tell dem: “Is not age. Is Guyana.”

Talk half. Leff half.
