$37m special education school opens in Mabaruma

Nov 5, 2026 | 2 min read

Region One’s first Special Education Needs and Disabilities (SEND) school was opened in Mabaruma yesterday, with the capacity for 30 learners, the Ministry of Education said.

The $37 million facility was named in honour of former teacher Gertrude Ghanie in recognition of her contribution to education and to learners across the region.

Education Minister Sonia Parag commissioned the school in the presence of Housing Minister Collin Croal, Regional Chairman Brentnol Ashley and education officials. A specially equipped bus was also commissioned to transport learners to the facility.

According to the ministry, the school has a teacher trained in special education and teacher aides to provide individual support to children.

In her address, Parag said the facility would bring specialised educational services closer to families, reducing the need for them to travel long distances to obtain support for their children.

She said the school formed part of the government’s efforts to decentralise services and make education accessible to children regardless of where they live or their learning needs.

Croal also stressed the importance of investing in facilities that respond to community needs and provide opportunities for children with special educational needs and disabilities.

Those attending included Deputy Chief Education Officer for Administration Tiffany Harvey, Assistant Chief Education Officer for Special Education Needs and Disability Dr Keon Cheong, and Chief Schools’ Inspector Renita Barnes.
